I'm seeing a new psychiatrist in less than two weeks and I'm wondering how long does new medicine take to work. I currently take 32 mg of perphenazine, 3 mg of risperdal, 600 mg of trileptal, 80 mg of latuda and 1 to 2 mg of Ativan if necessary. I want something for my depression. I don't know if anti-depressants are good for bipolar disorder.

depends on you and the medication. Some medications work right away, some work a little bit right away, and others take a few weeks to get up to maximum benefit. For example, a dose of tranquilizer is a right-away thing, where a mood stabilizer or anti-depressant will work a little bit now and take weeks to maximize in your system.

Anti-depressants can take up to six weeks to become effective. SSRI's are not recommended for bipolar because they can induce mania. But there are atypical anti-depressants like Wellbutrin you can try.

It varies with everyone and some times it can take time to find the right drug cocktail that works for you. Just have to ride it out and keep communicating with your pdoc.
