I saw my doctor the other day, and I told her I was a bit hypomanic and going up.
Is that something you ever have done? |

I don't really have a regular therapist. With the NHS your GP will refer you to the local Mental Health Team, and they will see you for however long it is needed until they think you are "fine" and then they discharge you. If you need to go back, you have to ask to be re-referred by the GP. It's quite tedious. I've only gone through the process twice. My most recent meds adjustment happened through a GP who called the Mental Health Team, talked to the psychiatrist there who knows me, and then got back to me with what she had told him on the phone. That's usually how it's done here, unless you go private and pay a small fortune. I don't get manic, and my hypomanic episodes normally only last for 4-5 days and manifest in extreme irritability, so I am unlikely to even leave my flat in that state because I just transform into a complete menace. I become an absolute troll.
![]() Anyway, if I ever did begin to experience the onset of hypomania, I'd have to go see the GP and get a referral back to the MHT, and they don't seem inclined to put out fires until the whole building is in flames which is frustrating to say the least. You end up feeling really unimportant, like you're not "sick enough" yet so you'll have to wait until you are. To me, it sounds quite good to see a psychiatrist regularly just for a check-up, but the MHT will just discharge you when they believe you are "fine" and thus don't need their help anymore.

Yes, I'd report ongoing hypomania to my pdoc. However, I have meds to bring me down if I miss more than one day's sleep, and I use those to make sure that hypomania doesn't spiral up into mania. If I can't sleep on sleep meds, I call the doctor and I go in to see her.

Urgh, for some reason I can't edit my post?! Apparently my sleep deprived self has spent too much time on the psychotherapy forum (lol), but of course I meant to put psychiatrist.

I felt hypo earlier in the summer. I told my pdoc and he lowered my antidepressant. Since then I feel back to normal.
