I havn't had a period in about 7 months so I went to my Gyno today. She said that risperdal often causes this. Sure at first it was nice but I would eventually like to have kids. She gave me some pills to try first but if those don't work then it looks like I'll have to say goodbye to my wonder drug, risperdal. I'm not thrilled about it at all because it really calms my temper and irritability. Anyone kNow of a med similar that may help?

I'm on Invega Sustenna, its like the active metabolite or something of risperdal so I'm not sure if you'd have the same problems with it or not... also as I've mentioned before Depakote helps me a lot

I guess this has something to do with prolactin levels. I almost couldn't breathe when she said I may have to stop the med. I'm so pissed now

I had the complete opposite effect. When I started the Trileptal, I was having breakthrough bleeding constantly. It was so frustrating. I went to the doc and they would give me pills with higher hormonal levels, or something like that, each time. I almost wanted to quit it, but I felt great on the Trileptal outside of that. So when I went to the gyno she gave me the nuva ring since the pill and my Trileptal both metabolize through the liver. Periods have been extremely light ever since. Oh the joys of being a female...

I had the same problem with Invega so if risperdal did it to you Invega might too. I just never told anyone about it because I can't stomach the thought of stopping Invega. It's the only thing that has tamed my manic and mixed episodes. I haven't been full blow manic in over a year. I have had a psychotic episode since starting it in July of 2014. I already have a child, plus my husband died and who knows if I'll ever find anyone else, so I'm cool with not being able to have any more kids. But if you want kids then yeah you may have to get off. Good luck I hope you can find an alternative.

I get you. Risperdal was literally my life saver. But the increased prolactin levels wreaked havoc in my life and it just became irrational to continue.

Alternatives that have less of an effect on prolactin levels are abilify and geodon - there are more but these are the two I have experience with.

So far geodon has been a miracle worker. Abilify gave me akathisia.

I had been taking risperdal for awhile and it works great. Never had any problems until about 6 months ago. I had missed periods and or very late inconstant periods. I talk to my pdoc last week about it and she changed me to the new drug Rexulti. It seems ok so far only been on it for 5 days. I'm hoping it works as well as the risperdal. But my main concern about the Rexulti is I'm not sure my insurance is going to cover it since it's so new and there's no generic. I have samples right now. Seeing my pdoc next week to discuss the meds. I guess I'll let you know how it works out.

How long did it take for your periods to come back? I'm not sure if it's the risperdal or if my body is just messed up from years on and off birth control.

hey guys, this happened to me on risperdal and invega. my suggestion is to google studies about how metformin or abilify can reverse the increased prolactin effects of these drugs. metformin is a diabetes drug, but it totally reversed this effect and i got my periods back fast. abilify worked as well but i couldnt tolerate the side effects. the studies arent widely known so print them out if you can and take them to your doc and ask about it.

What I have on hand (left overs) is 20 mg Abilify and 100 mg seroquel. I called the nurse at my pdocs and explained why I have to switch meds so I'm waiting on a call back. Honestly, I'm terrified. Especially since I just got over a hypomanic episode. Go figure with my luck, the one miracle med for me is making me sick. I'm a bit pissed today to say the least.
