So I saw my primary pdoc today. I've been in a partial hospitalization program for about the last month due to a bout of depression. The pdoc at the program prescribed me vistaril for my anxiety. When I saw my primary pdoc today, she told me to not take another dose of it, because she has seen it make people psychotic. Anyone else ever hear of this?

It's an antihistamine actually. And sometimes it's used for nausea. My son's pediatric pdoc uses it rather than benzos with kids because it is gentler and not addictive like benzos. Doesn't seem like it would be a med to cause psychosis, but who knows?

I did a quick search about psychosis as a side effect. I found plenty on it being prescribed to prevent psychosis and only one stat about it causing psychosis and the incidence was like .01% of several thousand side effect complaints. Doesn't sound like it is a common side effect at all.
Thanks for this!

Maybe with me already having some psychosis she's worried about making it worse. I don't know.

But from what I read quickly glancing around, many people were prescribed vistaril to help with psychosis.

I'm not sure about it and psychosis. I have psychosis from time to time and was prescribed it anyway. It didn't do anything when I was on it. Didn't even kind of work. It was like taking a sugar pill.

I've taken it a lot over the years, sometimes at fairly high doses and never had an issue. Maybe it is related to phenergan (I think it is); phenergan contains a warning that it can create mania in someone susceptible to it. And boy did it for me...scary, scary hallucinations and I was already so sick (was on it to help me stop vomiting after lithium toxicity)....but hydroxyzine has always been completely safe.

I've had psychosis before but not with Vistaril. I have it for anxiety. It usually makes me tired (which I guess is better than crawling out of my skin in panic).

I was just prescribed Vistaril as well. I take 25mg 3x a day for anxiety of sleep. It hasnt made me manic...yet. The wellbutrin I was on sent me into mania. Ive never experienced anything like the hell that was for 2-3 days straight.

The vistaril does NOTHING for my anxiety. At best it makes me super tired. Thats about it. Ive never been on a benzo.. but because I have a history of addiction to pain meds I'm pretty sure my pdoc wont ever prescribe me anything I'll ever actually need, despite the fact that I'm in active recovery.

Yes but I was on Abilify 30mgs and Vyvanse 40mgs a day. Abilify is affects the histamine receptors and is an agonist vs. Visteril which is a histamine antagonist, and unlike most anti-psychotics Abilify is a dopamine and serotonin agonist, so it completely counteracted my medicine. That's why and not everyone will have a bad reaction.
