I go to my GP for a sore shoulder and she wanted to put me on five days of prednisone, 10 mgs per day, Since this wasn't the taper I was used to for asthma I figured "where's the harm?"

The harm is it's still a flipping steroid! I still had mood changes! I gambled $100 I couldn't really afford to lose and had suicidal ideation. I ate klonopin like candy to get through the ten days it was in my system!

I'm writing this to tell you all -- ANY steroid is a bad steroid for a Bipolar I. BAD DOGGIE. No biscuit.
Thanks for this!

Thanks for the "heads-up", BastetsMuse. As it happens, I've been struggling with a sore shoulder for a few weeks now. I don't know where it came from. It just showed up one day & hasn't left. I've thought a few times that perhaps I should see my doctor about it. But I know he'll just want to give me some shot, or some pills, & I really don't want either one. So, as long as I can get by, I think I will...

Wow! I'm a medical assistant and never heard any of my pts complain about prednisone. But then again, not all my pts were bipolar. Hope you bounce back smoothly!

Last time I was on prednisone was last april and ended up in the hospital for 4 days cause it made me severely suicidal and psychotic. I just get cortisone shots now and they don't bother me.

I would imagine this would probably be the case for a lot of people who are bipolar. Prednisone causes increased energy levels in anyone, bipolar or not. So, it would make sense that it could be a trigger for mania.

Prednisone makes me manic. Every couple of years or so I tend to have a bad asthma episode and I need it to keep my airways open. But I have to be pretty sick to get to that point, and I always dread taking the drug because the crash is so bad after the mania.
