Do you have a hero/heroine for Mental Health awareness? Someone well known or not who has championed and made a difference to you or the mental health world in general?

Mine is Margaret Trudeau. In the 1970s she was married to the then Canadian Prime Minister. Her manic behaviour at the time was extremely public and she was treated terribly by the international press. The worse of it all was the way her husband the PM treated her. He basically locked her away and took her children from her.

In recent years she resurfaced as an advocate for Mental Health and quite publically identified as bipolar.

Well, how things come around. Her son just became himself the Canadian PM and he proudly had his mom by his side throughout it all. She is now being lauded for her efforts to reduce the stigma of mental illness making it a very current (and much needed) topic in the media.

Go Maggie!

Carrie Fisher is mine. To be in the spotlight to try and change the stigma takes a very strong person. Not only has she admitted to suffering from bipolar, but she also talks about very intimate details of her suffering.

Virginia Woolf: She was in the spotlight for her madness and continued to produce amazing pieces of work. She was outspoken for her needs and did what she could to protect her and her husband.

I also pick Carrie Fisher. She has a no-holds-barred approach to discussing her mental illness. She has a lot of courage.

I just read an article from WebMD which comes across as basically a case study of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He would be mine for his radical empathy, an idea the author attributes to King's experience of bipolar.

...but it's really difficult to choose just one person.

Carrie fisher for pretty big reasons.

But my bipolar all star is Dr. Kay Jamison Redfield. She is the leading expert on bipolar in the US.
