Hi all - I am very excited because I adopted an adorable Jack Russell terrier mix from a rescue in the south and I'm picking her up this Saturday! I can't wait to have her as part of the family. I just hope she gets along with our cat!

I thought it would be fun to share a bit about our pets and how they help you personally in a therapeutic sense. How do your pets help you?

My cat really calms me. I love laying my head on her and listening to her purr. And she's so loving that I love petting her and mKing her happy. I love her so much maybe more than some if my friends.

I have a griffon-poodle four years old and a cat six months old. I rescued the cat from a garbage bin when she was really small -someone had thrown her in the trash, trapped inside a plastic bag.
Animals are a huge part of my life. Sometimes I think I like them more than I do people. Where I work we also have horses and ducks and other dogs etc. Just today we got two beautiful bunnies as well.
It has been proven that animals are very good therapists. They have no sense of ego, they just goof around. They are life in its purest form.
Taking care of an animal during bouts of depression can be taxing. But they'll help you. They'll make you get dressed and go out. You won't be able to say no. They'll remind you that caring for others means caring for yourself. They'll make you laugh and they'll remind you that life is supposed to be pure and beautiful. They will draw out of you the most noble of sentiments. At least that's what they do for me. I think you made the best choice. Take care.

Well, I moved within the last few months, and wasn't allowed to take my cats with me, but I always loved having them.
At times when I was at my lowest, I remember them seeming so concerned and purring loudly and nudging me to get me to pet them, to get me to move when I just didn't feel like doing anything.
Honestly, at times it felt like my cats were the only ones in the house who actually cared about me.
I have so many memories of laying in bed feeling terrible or crying or something of that nature, and one of them coming up and laying with me, or rubbing against me. They were always so reassuring to have around when I felt my worst.

My cats are calming and petting them helps relieve stress. They help me a lot when I'm depressed, since they'll curl up next to me and butt their heads against me,purring the whole time.

I have a cat and a dog at home, but my "therapy" animal is my dog. I would love to actually get her certified because she is so good at it. She's a cockapoo and she is 4 years old now. She is a really fun little dog, but she definitely knows when I'm not feeling well. She will be my little shadow and not leave my side. She stays calm for me and will sit and snuggle with me as long as I need it. I find that it helps me to relax and I'm so grateful to have her.

I have two both from rescues. My little Lhasa, Abby is about 15 now, is very demanding and very comical. We love he so much and her health is still good.

My little Maltese, Scooter is so different. He is quiet and is around 13. His health is bad. He has congestive heart failure and struggles daily. He is also blind and deaf. But he still gets excited for bedtime. We don't know why but he does.

Both bring so much joy to our lives. I don't know what we will do when they are gone.

I have three Pugs. They all have their own personalities. The oldest is always by my side. When he's gone I'm going to fall apart. They all feed off of my mood. When I'm depressed, they are depressed and pile on top of me. When I'm manic they stay away from me. It makes me sad when even my dogs don't want to be around me, but I don't blame them because I don't even want to be around myself. We don't have kids, and have already planned not to, so they are my kids.
