I tried ambien and it didn't work for me, but then I switched to ambien XR for a period of time and it helped with my insomnia quite a bit. I only took it for about 4-5 weeks as I believe it has a tendency to be quite habit forming and is only meant for short term use.

I took this for a long time. ambien CR 6.25 mg but had to go up to the highest dosage.
It was great, put me to sleep & kept me asleep.
No hangover the next day. I took it every night for years until I got used to it. Then, I switched to Ativan for sleep.

I'm thinking about asking my Dr for Ambien again. I haven't used it in quite a few years.
Good luck!

I'm a fan. But mostly because of the hypnotic aspect.

I have ativan now which doesnt do much for me. That is what Im looking for, something to Keep me asleep as well as no hangover effect. My only concern is that it doesnt give me night terrors which many drugs seem to do.

Ambien made me feel weird. It didn't work for me. But it does for some, so it might for you. Good luck.

Ambian is great I take between 15-20 mg a night. Never knew there was a ER...since I often wake up at #-4 am I might ask about that.

I took Ambien for about 2 1/2 months and then stopped. First of all, it made me sleep eat (common side effect, just FYI). Pretty much every morning I'd wake up with a granola bar wrapper or empty yogurt cup next to my bed that I had no recollection of eating the night before. So, that wasn't good. Then it stopped working anyway, so my pdoc and I decided it would be best for me to not take it anymore.

it helped me at first, but i learned quickly that if i did not go to bed pretty much immediately after taking it, i would hallucinate. it was pretty scary, considering i was rather young to be taking meds, so i thought i was psychotic (i wasn't). i wasn't on an extended/controlled release, so that might make a positive difference to have it slowly working through your body. eventually built up a tolerance, and i'm glad to be off of it.

Yeah, you really need to go to bed right after taking it or you can miss the window and be awake all night. I never had the sleep eating problem though.

Yeah that's so true. if you don't go to bed immediately after taking it you'll just feel groggy and not be able to fall asleep quickly.

I don't know what or who is to blame.
I was dizzy in the morning from Trazodone and asked for something different.
Pdoc recommended Ambien. Prescribed 10 mg to be cut in half, which I forgot to do.
Never told me to titrate down from the trazodone (150 mg). So I went cold turkey.
The few nights I took it, the sweats and tremors were something to see.
And the eating binges were spectacular. I was awake but stumbling against every wall.
Now I don't know if the Ambien was bad, the Pdoc is bad, or I'm not well.
Or all of the above.

Ambien is classified as a hypnotic.. There is problems with sleep eating or driving , having sex etc and not be aware. until they wake up and realize they baked 10 cakes overnight ( yes I did this years ago) for some people.

They typically start to lose effectivness for most people over time.

Its worth a shot ,but as previously advised ,, make sure you take it and stay in bed , also good idea take it on a night that you dont have to get up and function so you can determine how it effects you .

Good luck

It's probably also worth mentioning that after becoming somewhat notorious for the weird side effects you and others have mentioned they actually reduced the active ingredient dosages within the pills from ~60 mg down to 8-12mg if I remember correctly... so the sleep eating / driving / amnesia isn't as common of a side effect now.

That is honestly a very good thing. Thanks for that reminder, I forgot the prescribing has been changed a lot !

i have been on it for at least 1/2 year. 10mg per night.
on top i have a whole load of other med
though my dr gives 10mg per night, i only take when needed.
or there was a period i take half a tab per night
beside ambien, i always have Ativan or Clonazepam compulsory dose
but those two don't help with falling asleep much

my dr wanted me off ambien earlier, but before she cut it i started doing worse
so she moved on to increase my other med and didn't cut anything

I skip med because I would rather be psychotic than living in the real sucky world

Well, it gave me somewhat of a deep sleep and made me feel very relaxed which I enjoyed. However, still woke up twice once to go to the bathroom. Hopefuly it will work better tonight.
