Do any of you have the experience that a little bit of good news makes you jittery and it's hard to turn it off? If so, what do you do to kind of slow yourself down? I used to think it was okay but now I know to try to not let it get to my head because I think a little bit of good news can spiral out of control, at least for me.

I just enjoy the excitment.
It's not like it would happen so often. So of course one feels excited. Just channel it in good way, don't overcelebrate... and one should be okay.

People without BP can get excited about good news as well. So enjoy it for what it is and keep an eye out for anything excessive.

If you have bipolar disorder, as your profile suggests, then yes, the excitement of "good news" could conceivably trigger hypomania, hell yeah.

I'm not saying it's "normal", I've only experienced it.

Yea, I wouldn't say I go all the way to hypomania I just feel good about something and then I think "Oh, maybe not such a good idea to feel that good...!" I've rated what I call hypomania on the Young mania rating scale as something like an 8, which is very low (it goes up to 60). But it's hard to tell how these things progress...

I've gotten a little hypomanic with good news too. Any stressor is a stressor, be it positive or negative.
However- I totally agree that you should enjoy the good news! Sometimes happiness is just happiness, it doesn't have to be pathologized. I personally am in a similar situation. I'm adopting a dog, which is so exciting! But then I find myself getting anxious and perseverating about all the other dogs in the shelter that I can't take home. That and the combination of the bizarre weather change here in NYC is making me feel jittery. |
