So I've had a bit of an issue for over a year now. After being on birth control for ages, I stopped taking it but never got my period back. I've been to two different doctors and both tried this hormone that is supposed to jump start your cycle. Both times were a fail, even after the highest dose. My dr then said it was probably the shock of stopping the pill and just "post pill amenorrhea". Well it's been a year and still nothing. My Gyno did do blood work that came back normal. (TMI coming) Well my bf and I haven't been using any form of birth control this whole time (welcoming a pregnancy if it happens) and I have not gotten pregnant. I'm really starting to worry. We're past the point of "trying" for now so on Monday I have an appointment to get back on the pill so I can at least have regular periods again. Not that I missed it or having to buy tampons lol. I'm starting to wonder if my psych meds are making me infertile and keeping me from having periods? Like really worried here. I read an article that names risperdal as a culprit of infertility so I've only been taking it PRN for anger and dysphoria. I'm not having any side effects that would point to any overproduction of prolactin. I think I'm going to call my pdoc tomorrow and request a blood test for this just to be sure.

Has anyone else experienced problems conceiving or with their cycles from their meds? Will this go away when (if) I get off meds? I really do want kids some day and I'm not getting any younger here.

I'll list my meds incase that helps.
Trileptal 600mgs bid
Buspar 45mg a day
Risperdal 2-6 mgs PRN (maybe a few times a month)
Ativan 1mg PRN

Please, any suggestions or likewise experience out there?

How's your weight? Being underweight of very overweight can affect hormones and ability to get pregnant. Most problems I had with psych meds were too prolonged periods.

I admit I'm pretty underweight and have an ED. I'm probably at my lowest weight. But out of concern and shocking looks from family, I'm making an effort to gain. My goal is to go up to 105-108. I know that still sounds bad but it's a lot better than what I am now. And usually I gain a few small pounds on birth control so that may help. At least I'll get my boobs back lol. I just don't know if jumping back on the pill is the smartest thing to do without further testing. Maybe I can try and see a nurse at my pdocs and see if she knows anything on it.

When I first started Trileptal I was getting breakthrough bleeding between periods. Because I was doing well with Trileptal, my pdoc suggested going to a gyno since that was not his area of expertise. And we solved the problem (Nuva Ring).
I think gaining weight may be a big help. Did your gyno say anything about your meds and birth control combo? I know Trileptal makes BC less effective anyway..

Have you seen your gyn? Hormone levels may be a good idea (day 3 I think for accurate comparision to the standards)

You are small like me but I was like clockwork until I started Lithium. Then my periods just stopped.
What's your BMI?

Lithium gave me hypothyroidism & hyperparathyroidism.

Did they check on your TSH, T4, or T3?

Good luck.

Yes we did thyroid levels. All good. And when I was on lithium it gave me hypothyroidism too but cleared up when I stopped. Not positive of BMI but I'm 5"4' and 97 lbs. Yea I know I need to gain.

Trileptal makes BC less effective? That's a bit alarming lol. But I guess I'm going to give it try again so I can at least have a normal cycle.

How long did you have hypothyroid on Lithium? How long did you continue?
I got scared & have been weaning down to avoid permanent damage but it's working pretty well for me.
Thanks.

How much did you weigh when you had normal periods without BC ?

I had hypothyroid for only about a month and treated it with thyroid meds but once I got off lithium it got back to norm. And I've been on the pill so long I can't even remember my weight when I had normal periods. I was on it since I was 14 because my period wouldn't stop. I bleed so much I became anemic. And the other time I quit the pill I got pregnant within 2 wks (planned) but had a miscarriage Psych meds and menstrual cycles (in women obviously). After the miscarriage, my periods never returned either. That was over 5 years ago.

My periods have never been regular. My weight has ranged from normal to overweight and back, so that probably isn't what's affecting it.

If I recall correctly I got tested and have too much testosterone in my body. Not enough to cause any really bizarre effects but enough that they started me on birth control to regulate my periods.

With BC, my periods are fairly regular, without; I won't have them for several months or more.

I am on several psych meds but the one I'm on that effects prolactin is called Invega Sustenna (its related to risperdal) and I have problems with TMI: lactation occasionally and I haven't had my periods.

Soooo to sum my rambling up, I have no clue, there are many factors that could be playing into it so I would advise you to bring it up with your doctor and maybe I should look into it s well because it can't be healthy just not having it? Good luck

I think your weight could be a big factor as well as the risperdal. When you are too underweight your body will stop periods to conserve energy. But the risperdal could cause problems with raised prolactin as well. I would get s blood test to determine if your prolactin is at an appropriate level. If it is, it's probably not your meds.

I have a appointment with the nurse at my pdocs on the 4th to discuss a med change in which she will consult with my pdoc on. I'm going to request labs to test my prolactin.

We are the same height, but my weight in lbs is 120. When I calculated your BMI it came out as 16.4 which is underweight to the point where I think your period would stop. When my sister's BMI was 16.5 she lost hers.

I hope you are able to figure it out, and I also hope you are able to continue to gain weight. I know it must be hard. Good luck.
