I had known about her work to support MI way back, when it was called Manic Depression. That was my initial DX too.
Both her parents were alcoholics. ( mine too)
Has this been connected to Bipolar?
Were your parents alcoholics? My mom even drank thru pregnancy with me.

my Dad is an alcoholic and i am too, difference is, im in recovery and have 4 months clean from alcohol and drugs. 60% of alcoholics and addicts have bipolar. many are in denial bc they dont want to quit and the diseease of addiction is the only disease that tells you , you dont have one.

No, my parents were never alcoholics. They don't drink at all. On top of that, neither of them have BP. I'm the only one in my family who has BP.

I think I'm a rare case, though. Most people with BP have a family member with BP, or their mother did drugs/alcohol during pregnancy.

So sad. I used to watch her show as a kid. I hope she died peacefully.

I don't think alcoholism is related to BP, but I've also heard that trauma isn't either. New studies come out all the time so you never know. Alcoholism can go hand in hand with BP for some. There is a chicken and egg scenario happening here.

My dad is what some might considering a functioning alcoholic, but I just say he's a big guy who likes his beer. I've never seen him drunk for the most part. But there is some stuff there he could work on. I love him just the way he is and don't feel it's my place to judge how it affects him.

My mom never drinks for the most part. A cocktail or two a few times a year, if that. Alcohol is poison for her and she just can't handle the drink.

In my opinion, neither of my parents fit "my criteria" for alcoholism. Ask a professional know it all and their answers may vary.

Being dual diagnosis(drugs or alcohol use) is very common for folks with bipolar.
My mother drinks too much and suffers with depression her whole life, her sister and brothers self medicated with alcohol and my aunt is bipolar as well as her son.
I drink too much and am bp1....

So far most of you guys didn't have alcoholic parents.
My 1/2 brothers-one bipolar.
Aunt on mothers side bipolar. My dads side has bipolar too. He was a dry guy or alcoholic. He'd go like 7 yrs no drinking. But always went back.
My mom has severe depression, but no more drinking since DX w Parkinson disease. She's on Meds and had brain surgury to install metal rods in her head.
She looks very young. Like we could be sisters now that I'm older.

Dad was a heavy, "functional" alcoholic, though I'm the only family member who would characterize him so. I'm a recovering alcoholic, formerly daily drinking, functional, and self-medicating. Been sober 8 years now. Elderly Mom has to have her cocktails, or glass of wine or beer. Heavy drinking is a family norm, but I'm glad to be done with it.

My mother was an alcoholic before I was born. She quit before she had me. She drank one time when I was a kid at a family party. She didn't drink again until I was 19 and going through some serious mental illness stuff. She relapsed for a few months at that time but she found a new church and she hasn't drank since (that was ten years ago).

The only thing is I have to hide my alcohol because she doesn't like it in the house. Thankfully I don't drink very often. It would be nice to be able to have a glass of wine once in awhile but I'm obviously going to support her. I'm not ready to live on my own yet. And like I said I rarely drink so it's not that big a deal.

My uncle (her brother) is an functional alcoholic In denial. My grandfather (their father) has been recovered since the 70s but drank all the time when they were growing up. So it runs in my family. I fully believe my mom is BP as well, just not as severe as me, and I'm willing to bet my grandfather is too. But no one gets help in my family except for me so I'll never know for sure.

My dad was before I was born, but he ended up swapping that for a religion-addiction.

My spouse and I smoke marijuana daily, but we don't view it to be any worse than caffeine. Looking to move to Colorado eventually so we don't have to be persecuted for it. Unless medical passes this year, in which case, we'll both search until we can find a doctor who will prescribe.

Is it the best thing for bipolar? Probably not, but I don't feel like it causes me to directly hurt myself or anyone else, and it's been 7 years since I started. Time will tell.

Sometimes I feel like pharma meds are not the best thing for bipolar either, what with all the side effects. I feel like it is much more likely that my antidepressant led to my first experience with mania rather than the marijuana.

It's so sad.

I powered stuff on my Facebook and out her and how she spoke up for bipolar disorder.

My mom doesn't accept that I'm bipolar and uses the word "bipolar" as an insult but she was like, "Did you know Patty Duke was bipolar?!?"

Sometimes it's easier for friends and relatives to relate to us having Bipolar when they hear a famous person has/ had it.
Yes. Rip. Patty Duke. Seems like a lot of famous people have passed this year. ;-(

My dad is an alcoholic, and my mom has paranoid schizophrenia. Alcoholism runs in my dad's family- it's been present every generation except for mine. I really admire for what Patti Duke did to raise awareness of bipolar disorder.

A close friend of mine was both an alcoholic and bipolar- they are two very difficult illnesses to live with at once.

My mom didn't use drugs or alcohol during pregnancy and my sibling and I are both bipolar. What's your source on that? I've never heard that causal link. Interesting...

Both parents are alcoholics. Mom drank while pregnant.
Both have significant mood issues. None diagnosed. My mom's side is riddled with artistic emotional folks. Some suicides and disasters. Some alcohol related. Dad is severely depressed. Taught us kids about suicidal ideation at a very young age.
Alcohol is so present and so triggering for me.i get panic attacks when I think about how similar I am to my folks
