I've been up all night despite complete med. compliance.
I told my husband yesterday I felt mania coming on, and it's here.

What do you do during manic episodes to keep yourself in check? Or keep from being destructive?

(I called my psychiatrist and it went to vm with no after hours support number)

I take Benadryl because it's an antihistamine and makes me sleep - but be advised that this was approved by my pdoc as a coping mechanism.

When I'm manic, I give up all monies to my husband and try to concentrate on household chores rather than interact with people. I stay away from strange men (hypersexuality is sometimes a problem) and spend quiet time during sleeping hours meditating if I can - but definitely spend some time resting my body even if my mind is doing loops.

Good luck with this. Post a lot; we're here and understand.
Thanks for this!

Thank for the quick reply!

I think I might turn my phone over to my husband, I applied for 3 personal loans online last night. This is obviously destructive.

I never thought of the benadryl idea, but it makes complete sense. I've taken it last week when I had allergies with doctor approval, so it has been approved.

Sorry for the rambling, you all get it...

Yes, I'd probably give the phone and the finances over to hubby for the duration. You do NOT need to borrow money to get into trouble as a manic person!

Yes, I get the rambling. Glad I could be here for you right now.

All of that sounds like a good idea. I'd try to hibernate a bit if you can. My troubles when manic always came from opening my mouth and telling giant whoppers and lies. I was absolutely nuts. I like the idea of turning your phone over. That sounds smart.
Hope you feel better really soon.

So I took some seroquel meditated for 45 minutes then took a nap.
I feel manic still, but not as high as this morning.

Thanks for all of the adivce!

I find the biggest struggle is to to keep the mantra in my head, these thoughts aren't rational. But a little reinforcement when I needed it helped

When I get that way, my husband micromanages me. He takes charge of the finances, tries to make me feel sexy for him rather than walking through stores thinking every man there wants me and I just ooze sex; he tries to get me out of the shower within a half an hour (I had a bizarre shower experience but that is for another day). He tries very needlessly to get me in bed at a reasonable time but of course even going to bed won't shut off my brain when I am manic. He takes my keys at night so I can't run off. He takes every precautionary that he possibly can.

That said, and to answer your question, I bounce my thoughts off someone in my life (for instance a therapist if you aren't comfortable with anyone else). They can tell me if I am just a bit off or if my thoughts are delusions.

What you said, that sleep is important, is right on. It is without sleep that I find myself most manic, even while taking meds.

Just keep your sleep in check. I know it's hard when your manic but if you don't keep up with rest, you may crash hard. You might need a AP for mania. Keep in touch with pdoc. I take saphris for sleep and it's an AP for mania. I've been quite stable since switching to that from Seroquel which left me a complete zombie the whole day, and more depressed. Depression has been my biggest problem lately. I hope you get through this ok and land softly! ((Bipolar hugsManic Today, advice needed...))

One of my BP friends says darkness is helpful to calm mania. Maybe lay in a dark room and meditate or listen to calm music? Good luck!
