A few days ago I set up an aquarium so that my two five year old grandchildren could have fun looking at the tropical fish. Although I say it is for them, it is really for me. The plants, fish, rocks, and sand are so pretty that I can't stop looking at them. It is wonderfully pleasing and peaceful. Even the hum of the filter has a calming effect.

I highly recommend setting up a fish tank if you need to add a little tranquility to your home. You can do it from scratch for less than $100. Just a thought.

Hello Woolly Bugger: The Skeezyks used to have an aquarium. Yes... it was wonderful! (At least HE thought so... His wife was somewhat less enthusiastic...) However, we now live in a townhome & there's little room for one. But it is a great idea!

My late husband was a fish enthusiast. He had many different tanks, culminating in a 75 gallon cichlid tank. When he died, I had to give his fish tank away. I couldn't handle the upkeep. But someday I might get a small 29 gallon tank with some tetras again. They are nice.

I used to be obsessed with saltwater tanks. I had a few and all of my money went to that hobby as a young teenager. It taught me a lot and was very rewarding, nothing like creating your own reef. Just watching it was relaxing, if i had more time and stability in my life i'd get back into it.

I set up a nice tank for them.
I would love to get back into it.

I too used to keep a tank for my kids when they were little. We had a lot of fun going to to the fish store together and taking care of the tank at home. I guess I gave up on having an aquarium when the kids became teen-agers. That was quite a while ago. I'm really glad the grandchildren live with us now, though. It's given me an excuse to set up the old tank again. I'd forgotten how therapeutic it is.

While we are on the subject of fish, have you done any striper fishing yet?

I don't know much about cichlids, but that must have been an awesome set-up. I do love tetras, though. I tend not to get them (other than neon tetras) because they can be a little too nippy for my small tank.

I had a beautiful tank in my room for the humming sound. My ex took it while I was away at IP though. I miss my orange koi that I named cheez it. It was huge. Looking at the tank and all the pretty colors really got me relaxed for sleep and that's why it was in my room. I wish I had the money and the stuff to set up another one. Enjoy your tank!

This is completely gross and I'm so ashamed of it I've never told anyone before but the summer before I was diagnosed I decided an aquarium might have benefits with my agitation. So I got one and set it up and all was well until I got REALLY bad and some of the fish died, as they do. I was too sick to deal with the bodies so they just stayed in there (one at a time at least) until the other fish ate them.

I gave it away the day I moved out and have never been so glad to get rid of a "pleasurable hobby".

I wish I could have one now that I have help when I get overwhelmed but I don't have space and this place is so light I'd just grow algae. And feel residual guilt. I believe that if you take on a living creature you are responsible for it and I didn't do very well with those fish (although they had good enough care while alive). Still, ewww......and bad fish owner.

I find it quite humorous and for good reason that you named it Cheez It. I've never had any, but I've been to a few folks homes that did. They are a beautiful fish!

I wish I had the energy to keep up with an aquarium. I had one when I was a kid, but my dad pretty much took care of it since I was still pretty young to know what to do.
