I wrote my pdoc giving her an update about my progress thus far with my Lamictal increase last month. I mentioned that I have some anxiety here and there. I think it's manageable, but worth mentioning. I just got a response asking if I would like to increase my Effexor to 225. Seriously?! First of all, that dose threw me into hypomania last summer. Maybe having Lamictal in there may not make it so bad, but every time I bring concerns to her, she just wants to up doses! I'm already borderline feeling overmedicated as it is. It's so hard to find a good pdoc, especially down here.
I just want my headaches to go away and not feel like this anymore. I guess that's too much to ask.
Thanks for listening

Are you anywhere near a teaching hospital? I found that I get much better care there. (To be fair my pdoc was my pdoc before the teaching hospital but since I'm on an MAOI I have needed her to coordinate with other drs. so have used the teaching hospital for other issues and have had consistently good experiences which is sometimes hard to get when you have an MAOI combined with a lot of med allergies).

What did you want her to do? Change your meds or something like that?

I think upping doses is better than adding new meds.

Looking at your signature and what I see here, your pdoc seems to be the kind of doctor who always adds and never removes. Is this true?

Also, aren't Effexor and Wellbutrin SNRIs? I see that Effexor tackles depression AND anxiety, while Wellbutrin only tackles depression. So, even though your pdoc's logic is flawed, I can see why he wants to up your Effexor. You said you had anxiety problems, so his first thought was to up your Effexor instead of giving you a new medication for your anxiety. (It's not a good idea to up your dose like that, I know... but I'm just explaining his logic.)

Why doesn't he get rid of the Effexor and use something like gabapentin or propranolol? You're already on one SNRI. Why be on 2? I think that's something you definitely need to talk to him about because it sounds like you could drop the Effexor and maybe get Ativan or Xanax PRN.... Or if you feel the need to take an anxiety medication every day, ask about gabapentin and propranolol

just my 2 cents

That sounds frustrating for sure. Did you share your concerns with her and was she receptive?

Well she just wrote me back and said I can come down on Lamictal. Which makes sense. I honestly want to be off of it completely because it's caused me nothing but trouble since I've been on it.

Seems strange that you're on Effexor AND wellbutrin. I'd ask to be taken off one of those.

As the dose goes up, I don't necessarily feel better. And even though now I'm finally able to work, I have that overmedicated feeling. My head has been killing me the past three days and I haven't been able to work. My memory is getting worse. I have random tics. It's just been a mess. The Trileptal was fine, Lamictal was added in PHP for some reason. The Effexor hasn't done anything for me in the first place. I've mentioned going off of it a few times to different doctors and I'm always told not right now for whatever reason. I was on Pristiq originally, but then the price jumped and I was switch to Effexor. The Wellbutrin was thrown in last summer and I actually like it. Since it was added, I've actually been able to stay awake during the day instead of drinking caffeine all day. So that I want to keep. Ugh mixing cocktails are annoying...
