So, I think my grandmother has completely lost it as of today. I can't tell if it's late life schizophrenia or if she's just senile.

She keeps saying that we've been telling her things that we didn't actually tell her. She claims we've planted things in her mind

She is also convinced that my grandfather is trying to lock her up in a nursing home "because he's jealous". (I'm not sure what she's implying.)

She even said to my father today, "Tell your sister that she's a lying b****. I spent all last night cooking dinner for all of you, and NONE of you came. She told me that you were all coming! How come you didn't tell me?? YOU are a liar too. You are all ganging up on me because you don't want me to be happy. I know it because I saw you whispering to your father last night." (FYI we live in Massachusetts and she lives in the Carribbean. We haven't visited in 4 months.)

We used to think she had dimentia, but after talking to her today, we realize it might be more than that.

I know you're not doctors, but do you guys think she's just senile, or do you think it's possible schizophrenia? Maybe both? We're sending a nurse and a psychologist to her house to get her assessed.

Sounds like dementia to me. My grandmother started acting "off" in her later years before she passed. But my grandmothers dementia, and my grandfathers dementia were different. Really, only an MD will be able to help with that.

Ah ok. Thanks for your feedback. If it were schozphrenia, it could be treated... but since it's likely dimentia, I guess there's nothing we can really do

We're planning on putting her in a nursing home by mid next week.

If this is suddenly happening or suddenly worse she should be checked for a urinary tract infection. They can make older people seem like they have suddenly gotten dementia or much worsened dementia but treating it will help. It was always the first thing checked when I was working with older adults.

Awesome to know! Thanks so much! I'll mention it to my parents.

I guess it's kind of similar to how thyroid problems can make you look like you have BP. It's bizarre
