Does anyone else do this? Sometimes I will also rock from side to side. I do it when I'm upset or anxious, but I also do it when I'm listening to someone, waiting for something, playing games on my iPad etc.. My doctor noticed it this morning during my appointment and asked me how long I've been doing it. Meds? Nervous energy? Self- soothing? I also have RLS and essential tremors.

Yes. When upset or anxious. I've always figured it to be a self-soothing kind of thing. But nervous energy could certainly be a part too.

So when your doctor asked, did you know how long you've been doing it? (Mine goes way back to where I don't remember a start time.)

It's not too unusual for me to sway side to side, but not sure what that's about (except in cases where if it's something obvious, like holding an animal or something -- a comfort thing.)

Have you noticed doing one or the other specific to certain situations? (For example, would listening to someone always go with side to side?)

(I have RLS too, but I've never considered there to be any connection.)

I usually do when I'm nervous, but also when I'm depressed. I think it's a self-soothing thing for me.

I do it too. sometimes i'll hold my knees to my chest and just rock and cry. I think it is self soothing and nervous energy combined.

My father passed away when I was 4. I started rocking back and forth hard. Nobody told me he died. I did it until I was like 11. For me it was a soothing thing. At least that's what therapists have told me. I still do it my rocking chair if I'm really anxious.

I do it when I'm upset or very depressed. Like everyone else has said, it is a soothing technique.

I think you all are right. Nervous energy. I remembered doing this a few years ago. It would be in my afternoon classes, and I'd catch myself doing it. Now I've noticed again in the last few weeks. Then and now I have been on Wellbutrin. I started back on it 3 weeks ago.

It's a very common self soothing action.. I would say "most" all babies were rocked to sleep at some point or another, so stands to reason rocking = self soothing , especially useful when stress is over whelming.

When my Fibro pain hits a 8- 9 I start rocking, alot.

I love when it is summer, and I can lay outside in a hammock or rocking bench.

I do a lot of rocking, I'm always, literally almost always moving my legs or feet, like shaking them. I pick at my nails & cuticles or blemishes. Unless in conversation with someone I'm not fully comfortable with, I stop it because it's constantly commented upon if I don't. It agitates my boyfriend.

I actually find myself doing the rocking alot when I'm happy, gleeful, like a little kid, but on the flip side I do it when really agitated & anxious. Also when I'm focusing on doing work on the computer, I used to do it when I was studying.
