I know no one here is a doc, but has anyone been through something like this on an oral steroid? I was prescribed it to get a terrible skin outbreak under control temporarily. I took 2 20mg tablets and I am flippin flying high. I'm almost scared because how can this be so intense? I've been like this all day. Read a book, painted some pictures, went out to dinner talked my husband's ear off. I absolutely cannot sleep I'm getting more and more revved up and I'm hearing the distorted "music" I hear when I get symptomatic.

Yesterday I was a lump on the couch.

The doc was completely aware of my medications- Celexa, risperdal, clonidine, topamax, Elavil.

Unfortunately, husband is a light sleeper and our bedroom is this lofted open plan thing so I'm hiding in the darkness and can't do much til. 5am. So bored! Gotta find my heAdphones.

Right there with you. I took my prednisone too late today (for an asthma flare up); maybe that's why I can't sleep! I just get agitated and aggressive though.

Keep reminding yourself it's temporary and due to the prednisone. Could you maybe take a bath to calm down? Cool washcloth over your eyes?

Did they give you a shot of a steroid at the doctor's office? (like solumedrol?) Those affect me even more than the pills.

I took a shower to see if that would help but I'm just going up. No shot at the docs. This is my first time ever on an oral steroid instead of topical.

Years ago I did get a lot of energy while on steroids. My father and son both had very extreme reactions to prednisone also. I was recently violently ill with a severe allergic reaction and at first ER visit, they refused to give me prednisone due to mania triggering. They prescribed a steroid alternative and I was back in the ER a few days later, much worse with giant hives all over. They decided we had to do prednisone (I was going to demand it anyways) and I took a short course, beginning at 40mg's. I was so sick, that I think it kept mania at bay. Prednisone usually works FAST, but in my case, I remained very sick, well into the taper phase. Please keep an eye on things and take care of yourself. (((Hugs)))

Thank you. Luckily it's the summer, my son is in camp, and my mother just retired so I have resources. Hate to have to rely on other people for this nonsense though. I mean it's very real but my mom is old school and doesn't get it but would still help.

Hi,

Treatment with corticosteroids can be very trying. The med can cause an upswing or a downswing in mood. Some swing into hypomania/mania, while still others go into a depression. I have done both. I have also had steroid-induced psychosis.

I have had many high dose treatments. I also stay on low-dose daily, which can also create challenges.

Please contact the prescribing doctor to see if there is any other alternative.
A lower dose? A different med? A topical med/lotion?

Please also contact your pdoc who can help to decide if you need a med adjustment to help you to safely get through this time. Reactions to prednisone can get out-of-hand quickly.

I agree with Elsa, keep a close eye on yourself. Explain to others around you, asking for them to also keep a close eye on you.

Be safe.

Can't take prednisone bc I crawl out of my skin and my heart explodes. I think this is not uncommon with steroids. Maybe ask your doc for other options. Hope you feel better!

Thanks. Never again with this stuff. I bought an herbal tea for liver, kidney and lymph cleanse that I hope will help with my skin from the herbalist. Can't be worse than this crap. I can't believe what 20mg did to me. I'm still not right. I hope I some sleep tonight

I'm going the natural route with my skin again. It was a really bad flare up, but full-blown mania is not worth it.

I took it for poison ivy and I felt like a million dollars on it.
Didn't have any more aches and pains and had lots of energy.
The problem is coming off of it. I came off it cold turkey and that
is a no no.
You are supposed to taper off of it.
The cold turkey thing was horrible I felt awful.

Steroids + Bipolar seldom ever works and it can be pure hell.

Can you ask your Pdoc or GP for a short term benzo to help you manage through this hell on earth.

Last time I had no choice but to take steroids due to my asthma my GP and Pdoc loaded me up with a hefty dose of xanax and valium just to get through that hell ...

I hope your feeling better soon

I've had issues with oral steroids. I had more trouble with medrol than I did with prednisone though. They affect my sleep and cause anxiety.

If they are truly needed for a medical issue, maybe call your pdoc and explain the situation and see what he suggests to help get you through.
