Does anyone attend groups to help with any issues? If so how do you find one? I'm not sure what I'm looking for but I know my issues : bipolar, depression, self esteem, self confidence, self conscious about body, trust, abandonment issues, lonely, inner critic. Yikes I got issues.

I haven't attended any groups, no, but my husband is always insisting that I go to the mood disorder NAMI group. I don't know if I want to though. I keep on telling him that you guys are my group.
Don't worry, boogie. I have issues too. Lots of issues. And so does my meowing cat. lol

How do people find us? We have flyers at the local mental health association as well as many of the offices of mental health clinics. We advertise in the local weekly free paper. We have a posting on the community 211 website. Finally we seem to get people by word of mouth. The group remains in flux between current and newby members as not everyone attends every meeting. There is a social side to the meeting. For many, which once included myself, the meeting is really the only opportunity to get out and be with people. As such, we devote time before each meeting for people to come early and chat in a friendly manner. We are self moderated. This means that there is no professional in attendance. I believe this allows people to freely talk without fear of being scrutinzed. |

I used to go to groups but they were either too hard to get to, or they were late in the evening.

I found some groups in my area but none of them apply to my situation. I wish they did. I just googled mental health in my area.

I attend groups associated with both NAMI and DBSA. Both groups have a variety of individuals with a variety of MI issues.

I attend groups similar to what JustAFriend306 described. They are peer-run and are sometimes very social if it's all old-timers and no one has any pressing recovery issues. I also socialize in the drop-in that's associated with the groups. It's all people with lived experience with mental illness and is peer-run as well, tho there are peers on staff. It's a very comforting environment but can get dull from time to time as most of us are on benefits and struggle with inactivity and poverty of speech and there's not a lot to say. I find it's best not to go too often. It's open weekday afternoons but i get the most out of it when i go just once or twice a week.

So I found a dbsa group by me and I'm aiming to make my first meeting next week. What can I expect. I spoke with my t she said it's a support group and were people talk about their issues and have support. Not to expect answers or cures. What are your experiences?
