I just filled out all my new employment forms for my new job in September. I have to get a physical and had to fill out a health history form. On that form were a bunch of yes or no "have you ever been treated for" questions. one of them was psychiatric conditions. I was going to lie and check no but I saw that lying on the form is grounds for immediate dismissal and I had to list my medications for the doctor. No way to lie about what they are for. But I put "depression" as my explanation instead of bipolar because I feel depression is less stigmatized than bipolar. At least, people don't think you're dangerous.

I don't know why psychiatric conditions had to be on the form. In fact I don't know why they need a medical history at all. It's none of their business what I've been treated for. I'm fairly certain no one but the doctor reads the form, except maybe an HR person. But I feel exposed, like they could retract the contract if they found out I had bipolar. I know legally they can't but there's always a way around that.

Anyone else have to do this? What did you do? I'm definitely not saying I have bipolar. Depression is bad enough but at least more understandable I think.

Yeah, I understand. You can theoretically "have been treated for" depression...as in "in the past, I'm fine now...." But once bipolar, always bipolar. I do think people look at it differently than straight depression. Whether that's right or not.

I'm sure everything will be fine. They just want to make sure you are fit for work and that you are a safe person. They do a background check for that, too, I'm sure. I've worked as a school teacher before, too, and my bipolar was never an issue (and I never had to bring it up, either). Everything will work out just fine!!!

No worries - those forms are all CYA BS, every line of them.

Look at it this way, if you lied, *then* they'd have a reason to terminate you and that would be their *out* to which you allude at the end of your post.
