Hey I have been bipolar my life though just discovered it a few years ago. Well maybe more than a few years. I've been trying to find a drug that works for me but well abilify did take the manic away but still depressed, and tried geodone which seemed to work the first time but gave me weird feeling so tried that again no wierd feeling but needed higher dose and well fda doesnt approve it so my psych suggested latuda which i started on 20mg at 60mg atm and I feel nothing from it or see any change whatso ever, still , It doesnt make me tired or have any side effects and I don't see any positive things either guess I'll keep going up in dosage.. like I never really have side effects from drugs. Lots of medications seemed not to work for me besides well oh depekote made me gain like 50 pds ty depekote not. and the geodone wierd arm feeling was in my arms but it made me actually want to do something which i loved felt motivated. too bad when I took it again couldnt get same effect. so latuda I hope it starts to work soon anyone else hardly get side effects? or have anything seem to not work fo ryou?

Took me since 2008 (diagnosis) until last year to find the one that seems to really stabilise me. I've been through so so many different kinds in different doses I've lost count. What works for one may not work for another, as you yourself know too.

I see you're new to PC - hi and welcome

HI, Thanks for the welcome yeah I was on another forum but lol If I can't member the name thought it had psych in it but wasn't this one so well after trying to search for it with no avail I decided to make a post here... been awhile.. Yes different for everyone. Most people seem to get tired after taking meds, I dont' seem to have that effect at all. It's weird. besides of course serequil which is to me like a sleeping pill that actually worked too bad it made me have such bad cotton mouth and a few other things I don't like it. plus didnt' seem to work or do any good besides put me to bed in a timely fashion. yeah i tried lots of drugs some just a few weeks the longest was depekote at different levels and with zyprexa for some time.... I hate depekote with a passion. abilify seemed to be the one that took my mania away which i guess is what they want, but I too depressed too and does **** for that. so we'll see maybe at a high lvl latuda will do something because 60 isn't seeming to be doing much of nothing.

I feel with mixed episodes it is so hard to get the meds right.... at least for me. Seroquel sometimes helps on a high dose. For me, I also stay away from Depakote, because of the weight gain, although it seems to be a good anti-manic. Lamictal works to a point in conjunction with other meds. I have to stay completely away from SSRI antidepressants and Wellbutrin, or it will send me into a terrible dysphoric mania. Usually I find I can get some relief from mixed episodes, but I have to ride it out, and eventually it runs its course. Sometimes my pdoc will put me on two antipsychotics at once, although this is generally discouraged based on side effects like QT prolongation (never experienced any issues with it though). It helps a little bit with mood stabilization, although I still struggle.

I was never on Latuda, but I'm afraid to take it since I hear a lot of people get more restless on it than Seroquel that I'm taking. Benzos help too, like Klonopin, but I have to be careful not to go overboard with them when in a mixed state.

I get side effects from pretty much everything. Except for lamictal and gabapentin.

Seroquel seemed to help me when I was in a mixed episode last year. At least, I was told it was a mixed episode anyway. Regardless, it definitely brought me back down to reality.

Usually takes longer than a few weeks to get the benefits of the meds. Maybe your not giving them enough time?

I don't know about the mixed episode. I have been diagnosed about 15 years ago been on dozens of meds. I agree that you have to give them some time to work and for me after two or three weeks the most severe side effects taper off.

Only four years back I, together with my great pdoc, found a combination that is working for me. Topamax twice a day, Welbutrin, Risperdal twice a day - I do not experience any side effects known to me on this combination. If I have a manic episode I take Seroquel XR (which is much better than Seroquel) and Clonazepam, the side effects are still quite severe but it gets me out of it and stabilised.

Good luck, I hope you find what works for you.
