Do you think the effect of meds is partly due to how we think about them?
So for example, I think Latuda works for me, but maybe my positive thoughts about Latuda is really what's working? Does that make sense? Kind of like a placebo affect, but without the placebo. Mind over substance... |

I have caught myself red handed experiencing the placebo effect before. "Wow this med appears to be working, I feel pretty decent today" ... and then noticed the pill was still in the container, I'd forgotten to take it. POOF! 50% of my good mood magically disappears immediately.

In school for psychology they taught us that a high percentage of the effectiveness of psych meds was the placebo effect, so like 50-80% of its effect would be due to what you thought about it. However, the placebo effect does cause real physiological changes in the body and brain so it still causes it to work if that makes sense.

Fascinating thread, folks. I've wondered the same thing.

I too think for myself it is more of a placebo effect.

I have a positive attitude towards my meds but nothing is working for my depression. Circumstances in my life are currently going down hill as we speak. So frustrating!

I think it's possible that positive thoughts can have a positive effect.
At the same time, I have started many meds with a very positive, hopeful attitude and the meds have failed or have been truly intolerable. I feel genetics play a larger role than attitude, although attitude is very important! ![]() ![]() WC |

I've tried to stay positive on some meds but it didn't work out. (Abilify being a prime example.) It could be posable to get the placebo effect, though.
