My episodes all last about three months. This is an average. Sometimes they're shorter.

I'm rapid cycling.

Depression: 2-3 weeks
Hypo/mania: 1 week

I usually have 3-4 weeks between episodes

Before the rapid cycling, depression used to last 2-4 months. I'm not sure about hypo/mania because I was Dx'ed 1 year ago and that's when I started rapid cycling. *sigh*

If you didn't rapid cycle till after dx I would look at your meds!

Hypo/mania lasts for several weeks or until I call my pdoc, who promptly deals with it by adjusting one or both of my APs. One summer long ago I was manic for the entire season, I just didn't know I was bipolar at the time. So I went unmedicated...it wasn't pretty.

My depressions, on the other hand, tend to last for months and are not amenable to med changes for the most part. My last severe one (the one that landed me in the hospital) required major increases in my Lamictal and a small uptick in Zyprexa. It didn't take away all of the depression but it did end the suicidal ideation.

Anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending. I alternate between rapidly cycling and then sometimes more "classic" swings of long lasting mania/hypomania, then into depression.

I do tend to rapidly cycle more in the summer and have longer-lasting depressions in the fall/winter though. In the summer, I used to have longer lasting hypomania/mania, but now my summer pattern tends to be: 1-2 weeks of depression, 1-2 weeks hypo/manic, baseline, then repeat.
