So I made a thread about hallucinations the other day (http://forums.psychcentral.com/bipol...ucination.html)

I want to tell my pdoc about my hallucinations, but I'm afraid of getting committed.

If I admit to the hallucinations, is there a chance I'll get committed?

What does it take to get committed for hallucinations?

If you are calm and controlled and tell her that you wanted to be honest with her. I don't think she will commit you.

I think one can only be committed if he or she is thought to be a threat (able to harm) him or herself or others or completely out of touch with reality (e.g. you don't even know what day it is or who is the president). At least that's how it is in my state.

I am 100% positive you won't be committed.

It's only if you're a harm to yourself or other people.

Remember: Me, raging delusional maniac having paranoia and mild hallucinations... not committed. lol

Talking about hallucinations is not only safe (as long as you are) but a really good idea. I didn't tell people about it early on and then it was awkward to explain later after being on an AP made them stop for the most part (I wasn't on an AP for a fairly long time because I did not tolerate them, one after another).

Good luck.

In my country you are mainly committed only if the government orders it or if a pdoc judges you extremely suicidal. In my case when I was hospitalized, I technically wasn't committed but I wasnt there on my free will either so I was in limbo. But yeah, it would be wise to tell your pdoc about the hallucinations, remember they are there to help us out. Hoping that everything goes smoothly.

The other reason to tell your pdoc about them is that hallucinations aren't always just the bipolar. I once was terrified of these hallucinations I was having of birds flying at me (I'm scared of birds) and other things. They were different than anything else I'd experienced. My pdoc said I needed to go to the ER but not the one at the hospital with psych, the one at the main hospital because she thought it was neurological. Sure enough I had lithium toxicity and as soon as they flushed a bunch of it out of my system I was done ducking under blanket to avoid the birds. I have even had bird hallucinations before but those were different and I am so glad she saw the neurological warning and didn't land me IP for a week.

The criteria for commitment for observation in your home state is: harmful to self/others and/or unable to care for self.

You should be fine, no reason for commitment, in sharing with your pdoc.
