I just got diagnosed bipolar 1 during a stay in the hospital. I was prescribed abilify, and the dr said it was being used for multiple reasons including anti psychotic and mood stabilizer. Does anyone have experience with ability particularly it being used for multiple reasons st same time? Thanks

Hey there, you might have a bit more luck with your meds question if you posted it in the Medications forum: Psychiatric Medications - Forums at Psych Central

I've never been on Abilify, but like any anti-psychotic it can be used for bipolar depression as well as mania. These drugs often work well to stabilize mood when the usual meds (Lamictal, Depakote etc.) aren't enough. In my own experience, it was the Zyprexa that pulled me out of a severe episode of depression in which I became suicidal and was hospitalized.

Sorry about the bipolar 1 diagnosis. I was dx'd with the same thing when I was inpatient a couple of years ago and four mental healthcare providers have since confirmed it. It is what it is. Best of luck.

Welcome to PC!

APs can also be used as mood stabilizers. That is what my pdoc is doing now with having me on Latuda. I've also taken mood stabilizers and APs separately. I was taking Abilify with Depakote. Abilify didn't do anything for me, though.

Welcome to PC

Personally I was on Abilify for both mood stabilizing and psychotic reasons, made my insomnia worse (too activating at higher doses), but it did help my mood a little and anxiety a little. So yes APs can and are used for multiple reasons. Hope.this helps.

Welcome.

I take Abilify during the day to act as a mood stabilizer (seems to work for depression an mellowing me out so I'm not so irritable), and I take Seroquel at bedtime to sleep.

I haven't been on them long either (I just got out of hospital as well), however they seem to be a good combo for me. Good luck to you!
