Is it common for someone with bipolar to experience hallucinations and delusions? Or is that something completely different?

It can happen, happened to me. Delusions are a component of typical textbook mania I think, and hallucinations can also accompany them. Neither delusions or hallucinations are fun for me, get too paranoid.

I don't know if it's common, but it's not unusual from what I've been told.

I don't think it's part of bipolar.

Schizophrenia may be what you're looking for.

Anyone can have such hallucinations.
Including bipolar manias.

Yes, it can be part of mania. I went through a psychosis 5 yrs ago. And I've had delusions. I'm diagnosed with bipolar 1 and PTSD. That was after taking many tests as well. I saw a very good psychiatrist when I was diagnosed.

I've had delusions and since schizophrenia runs in my family I worried I might have it. My doctors feel certain it's Bipolar related and not schizophrenia. I've confirmed this with several doctors and they all say that Bipolar can induce delusions.

Just wondering because I've been diagnosed as bipolar 1 and have had many hallucination (auditory and visual) and mild delusions. Wasn't sure if it was normal.

I'd say it's usual in mania and like someone else said, schizophrenia. When I'm mixed or manic and not sleeping for days I start to hear things. I'm going through it right now. Last week I only could get myself to sleep 2 hours at a time and I started hearing distant music when it wasn't there. Or cell phone sounds when my phones on silent.

I get both, and honestly, hallucinations/delusions are somewhat common for me. For example, 3 weeks ago I thought I was "philosopher of the universe" -- whatever that means. Then 2 days ago I kept hearing an iPhone ringing for 40 minutes straight. Drove me nuts!

But I can usually tell what's a hallucination and what's not. However, that's not the case for everyone. And delusions? I can't tell

I'm pretty sure Abilify induced this dysphoric manic episode I'm experiencing right now. Annoying.
