My pdoc and I were discussing my meds and he said haldol is "a strong medication."

When you think of haldol do you think of a strong med? I never knew much about it except it's old.

Haldol can be prescribed in a really varied range of doses. I've been on anything from 1 mg all the way to 20 mg. in my experience, 1 mg = pretty mild; 20 mg = knock you on your @ss strong.

Side effects are dose-dependent. At times it's prescribed with Cogentin to mitigate the side effects. Haldol is a very effective antipsychotic.

It's definitely an old med, but sometimes the old tried-and-true meds are the best option. Lithium and Depakote are also relatively "old", but they're considered to be the gold-standard first line meds to deal with mood stabilization.

I was told in the ER that Haldol was a strong med and I would need to be monitored when walking because it's highly sedating. It was not sedating to me and didn't even feel like it worked....but I did end up getting some sleep for the first time in about 9 days. Might have been the Haldol or maybe my body finally gave out. Not sure.

I've never had it, but when I'm IP it's usually a PRN if my anxiety ramps up too high. I guess it's a strong drug, but I don't really know.

I give Haldol to my mother for extreme restlessness and agitation. 4 mg quiets her down allot and frequently puts her to sleep. Her doctor does not want me to use it anymore due to her age, but if the situation is serious enough, I will give her a smaller dose.

Haldol is old but damn well studied.

Strong? Meh....maybe compared to some other meds. But if " softer drugs " don't really help and cause funky side effects then I would be more comfortable taking a well studied med than these new sparkly expensive drugs with less studies.

I first had Haldol when I was IP. Then I've also had my current pdoc prescribe 5mg to me. It does not hit me right away but once it does it knocks me on my *****. My older daughter has tried to wake me and according to her I sound drunk. I only take it when I feel mania/ mix starting

What a heavy hitter drug to one person might not be to another.

To me the worse med on the planet is Zyprexa due to all the other problems it causes due to weight gain , increased blood sugar/diabetes , cholesterol issues, joint pain and degeneration etc etc etc

The real issue is whatever meds and lifestyle changes that are needed for a person to manage bipolar and enjoy life is really what matters.

Meds of course can only do so much .

I hate zyprexa!! While it did help my mixed episodes it totally made my cholesterol skyrocket and I gained weight rapidly. Not worth it...
