I'm wondering if being married plays a role on how much you get from SSI or SSD. I'm in the process right now but thing is, I have a ring on my finger. I think I heard somewhere that being married affects your amount you receive. Can anyone give me more info on this? Im afraid I may have to tell my bf we can't ever get married Social security and marriage?.

I got extra for being married. It was only $100 but I'll take it. Every little bit helps.

I'm not sure. I think it might effect SSD but not SSDI. The amount you are paid by SSDI is determined by your work credits and how much you've paid into the insurance program. SSD is different though and marriage might effect that.

I'll ask my attorney about this. I feel bad for wearing my ring now that this could be bad. I'm hearing different outcomes.

I think that is best. It's too important to leave anything to chance.

I'd definitely talk to your attorney about it.

My husband gets ssdi and at no point did they ask about my income at the time. I don't think what I earned matters to his monthly benefits, but it did hurt us at tax time.

It depends on whether or not you are the dependant. Here the government takes the earnings of the spouse/partner into account and makes deductions from the disability assistance accordingly. That is why my boyfriend and I do not co-habitate.

Your partner's allowed income is capped pretty low also. So many financial disincentives to get married. There are benefits coordinators in Michigan who know the rules
