I'm so tired of people telling me this. Even had a guy who's a psychologist tell me I take too many meds! I've also been told I'm just stressed- insert remedies for said stress here. Bipolar is an excuse for everything in my life. Anything else you've been told?

If I may inquire, how many pills do you take?

Because I was taking 11 a day at one point, and that is certainly too many.

Have you gone for a full diagnostic assessment by a psychologist?
Thanks for this!

I was diagnosed over 10 years ago and been seeing a pdoc ever since. I take maybe 10 pills a day half of which are from my medical doctor.

Well, from random person... ignore, it is a crap talk.

From a psychologist? Or somebody who knows you closely? They actually might be onto something. Just because doctor prescribes them does not mean it's okay.

I had a family member killed by prescription drug. A doctor prescribed it... but that will not raise her from the dead. Many people gotten screwed up by shrinks.

So... consider advice from people who might know thing or two. Compare it to your own experience and decide. You know yourself best... but sometimes bit of outside perspective may help.

Then that is a lot of medication to be taking, but it sounds like you have other medical issues and that's why you're on so many. You can always inquire about going off some of them, if it won't risk your health or cause too many problems. Your doctor(s) would know best.

I think we know ourselves better than anyone else. I've been misdiagnosed. What's important is that you are finding ways to live a healthy life regardless of a label. Don't worry what other people might think.

Well it COULD, be true. I'm not saying it is, but have you at least entertained the possibility before you called bullshyt?

There is such a thing as too many meds, and sometimes meds cause extra issues which means taking even more meds...

When last did you have a med overhaul to see if you could find a less complex cocktail? Or did you just add a med per year since dx?...

And us bipolar folk ARE highly allergic to stress, so if you are stressed, it could definitely be causing you to be more symptomatic.

Sometimes even the most ignorant sounding folks can speak truths. But as mentioned above, only you can know or find out for sure.

When u say "changing" do you mean swop out certain meds or do you mean taper off everything, and start from scratch?

I feel if your taking one pill to allow you to take another due to side effects then I think it's possible to be on too many.

If I remember you have known this fellow for a long time? I could be mistaken of course. If he is why not remove discussion about your medications out of you're relationship?

Friends do not have to talk about every topic .

I'm talking about all your meds...

Not just antipsychotics.

Certainly you're not currently on 10 APs.

But anyway, I will take your word for it that a med flush / detox has been attempted and proved unsuccessful.

Yeah, this can happen with non psych meds too. You get medicated for one issue, the med has bad side effects, so you end up on another one and so on and on.

Re: You're not bipolar/You take too many pills

You must be doing well I guess, thats why people say 'You're not bipolar!'
If the meds are working well I would be reluctant to change them. Still lots people who dont understand MI.
Psychologists tend to deal in talking therapies and do not have medical training.
A psychiatrist is more qualified to deal with bipolar, talking though helpful, has limited use in bipolar. I would listen to your psychiatrist, hes the expert.

Gotta love all the armchair MD's on this site.

If your meds are keeping you stable, and they are prescribed by a doctor you trust, please try to ignore people who don't know what they're talking about, and who stigmatize you.

STIGMATIZE?

Oh, please. If her friend says something it is not with intend to stigmatize. If people on this side say something else than "you have to take every pill from DOCTOR because it is from DOCTOR"... it is not meant to stigmatize.

Nobody here proposes going off meds of sake of going off meds. But being on meds for sake of being on meds is equally bad.

My meds have to be taken every 8-12 hours so yea I have to take geodon twice and gabapentin three times a day. That's just because these meds aren't designed to last 24 hours. And yesterday my ignorant dad said "your just getting high all day!" Hah! I wish.

I don't think the amount of pills matter, as long as you're stable. Some people probably do need a lot of medication. Our bodies are different.
