I'm a uni student and I really want to study abroad next year for about six months or so. But I'm terrified that something will happen and I'll have a massive depressive episode or I'll go manic. I'm pretty stable right now but we all know how that loves to change! Plus going six months in a country where I only have semi-fluency, away from friends, family, and my therapist, makes me nervous. And I don't know if I can take a whole semester's worth of meds with me?
I plan on talking about it with my therapist. But, I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this or something similar? Hopefully a success story, lol!

I haven't but a friend of mine has. She has bpd and was gone for 4 months. She got a temporary mental health advisor while there. That's where she got her meds. She didn't have a therapist though.

I was in Japan for eight months in the late nineties without any psychiatric support or supervision; a pharmacist friend of the family sold me a suitcase full of anticonvulsants that I still don't know how I managed to smuggle into the country.

Before I was diagnosed with BP, I was stationed in Germany for three years. Loved it.

Well, I've never been overseas for more than a month but I did drop everything to run 30hrs away for 7 months. It was hard. I did have a depressive episode which I needed to seek help for but generally it was a positive experience.

I studied abroad in Chile my junior year of college and it was definitely a life-changing, stretching experience. That was before my diagnosis so didn't have to worry about meds though. Some study abroad programs are more structured than others so do your research to see which ones offer more support and can help facilitate with finding counselling and medical care while you're there.
