I have been taking 50mg 2x day of Topomax for about 10 days now, maybe longer, but you know, my brain is mush. Just prior to going into hospital and starting topomax i was at university and despite being depressed I was still managing to cope ok, averaging around 80%. Earlier that semester I nearly dropped out but Cymbalta got me going.

Anyway, mania hit so no more Cymbalta but hopefully late enough in semester that I didn't trash it. Since being on Topomax I have noticed I am a little more calm, but that could be the Ability and I am less hungry BUT I AM DEFINITELY STRUGGLING WITH WORDS BOTH WRITTEN AND VERBAL. My MAJOR is English and Writing and now I cannot find the most basic words. It is embarrassing.

This cannot happen to me. It is my career. It is the Topomax? If so, what else can I use to chill me as I have been VERY unwell. Saw my T yesterday. He sees me as mostly having rapid cycling BP with a usual hypomanic during the day then severely manic at night. Had really bad PTSD stuff but that just simply disappeared as it can do apparently when Bipolar is bad, as told by my T. I am thrilled by this as the PTSD stuff was distressing. Anyway, even with the ptsd my brain worked better than this.

Thanks Guys

The "I has the dumb" goes away after a bit.

The stupamax dumbness does go away. I used to pride myself on my vocabulary skills and being very articulate. Then I started Topamax and I felt as if I had lost the ability to speak coherently. It was awful. It still happens occasionally but not nearly as bad. I take my first dose at noon and my second dose at bedtime, and that seemed to have helped, rather than the usual early morning and nighttime dose.
Also, brain games and memory building tricks helped as well.
The reason I stuck it out was because it's the only med that's helped with my migraines. To me, that was worth it. You have to ask yourself that question. Give it time, see if the side effect subsides, do some maneuvering of the med-time if you need to, and go from there.

I only took topamax for a week because it did nothing for my mania and when I went IP I was on 3 different stabilizers so they tried to clean it up a bit and add an AP instead. But for that one week, I definitely experienced the difficulty with words. I remember feeling dumb.

I only took Topamax a few days... it caused me to have a few confusion spells. That freaked me out, so I immediately stopped it and contacted my pdoc.

Going to see my pdoc in about an hour to ask to be taken off this evil med. I just can't afford to lose my words like this. Really hope he understands. Problem is I have stabilised over the last few days but it could be, 'please be', the Abilify...or or simply the 'brain chemistry gods'.

Pdoc didn't show so I am just going to refuse the Topomax and talk to him about it tomorrow.
