I saw my pdoc on monday and we decided that I should try lithium again. I was on it about a year ago, only for 2 months. During that time I was drinking (now I'm sober, so side effects may be less severe) and I had moderate side effects from the lithium. I may start it over christmas break, as I don't have any obligations for about a month.

I had a mild tremor, and I definitely felt dull and zombie-like (but I was also in a severe depression at the time, and the lithium didn't seem to get me out of it). The main side effect was GI problems, constant diarrhea (sorry if that's tmi I just am wondering if others get that, and what I can do to prevent it this time). Do any of you take lithium with food--does that lessen GI problems for you? Any other suggestions?

I get tremors and my Pdoc prescribed propranolol. It helps keep them to a minimum.

I don't take my pills with food.

It all depends on dosage and how your body is processing it to get the right levels. When my dose is right I get slight tremors, hardly see them and thirst. Must drink lots of water. The GI issues might resolve themselves but taking with food should help. I don't all the time and find no difference. I have been on Lithium ( except for three months trial off it that didn't work ou) for five years. It really helps me and can be increased in episodes and decreased when stable. When I was in my manic episode I was on 1500mg day and pretty much toxic but it helped. Now I'm stable im on 1000mg and if I stay stable I will go down to 750mg. It has however effected my thyroid and I need to take meds for that.

I take it with food. Or milk.
Couldn't take 900mg without the loose stool (how is that) so I went to 600 and problem solved.
I'm @ .6 with 600mg.
Ask for time release also. They're softer in the GI, as you call it.

Yea I got the same GI issues you got on it. And nothing I ate or no meds would make it go away. Talk about making sure every public place you went to had a bathroom lol. I was stable on it though until I got toxicity that ruined my thyroid. I had to be put on thyroid meds for a few years until my levels got back to normal. But since it made me stable I decided to buy lithium orotate on amazon and started that a few days ago. After all my side effects and toxicity I refuse to try the RX again. But everyone's different and many people don't even get side effects but I know I really was miserable living in a bathroom stall lol!!
