So I did a lot of independent reading over winter vacation and one of the books I read was The Sleep Rwvolution by Arianna Huffington. I think most of us know the importance of sleep especially for someone with our condition but one part really scared me--she cites a study that claims that taking benzodiazepines such as Xanax and restoril for more than 6 months increases risk of Alzheimer's by 84%. I'm not on these meds but it still freaked me out and was wondering if study was legitimate--it's from Bmj 349(2014):g5205 "Benzodiazepine use and risk of Alzheimer's disease: case-control study"

No--very definitely in humans not rats. Just found original article online:
Benzodiazepine use and risk of Alzheimer?s disease: case-control study | The BMJ Kind of rusty with statistics but they very definitely say it's a public health concern. |

Reading through the study, it says daily dose--it focuses more of length of time they were on it--it's 32% increased risk if on it for 3-6months and 84% for 6 months or more.

Well I'm screwed. I've been on restoril for over a year. But as much stuff as I'm on and have been on over the years, I am pretty aware that I'm at risk for all that anyway. Plus my maternal grandfather had Alzheimers and paternal grandfather had dementia. It's just a matter of time. There are risks to all drugs you take.

I only take Benozos for 2 weeks tops and only occasionally when no other option works.
My maternal grandma had Alzheimer's and it's no joke. It's devastating for the person and family. I learned about this link awhile back and since my mom has taken 1 to 2mg of Ativan daily for many years I had a panic attack and told my mom and she said she has no other choice. Since we have the same Doctor, I mentioned the study to my doctor and my concern with my mom and he blew the study off. I really wish my mom would consider another option as this really concerns me. |

I research side effects of all meds extensively. My doctors say I have a "phobia" of them and told me I could not look up side effects anymore. I followed that advise for a few months but then it felt fishy and I'm not falling for it.

Zanax for over five years. Memory was excellent until lithium.
Sometimes it's the combo instead of specific meds.

Hmm.. I don't think researching long term side effects of drugs is a "phobia"....
I read this study as well... there have also been some very scary studies re SSRI's, atypical antipsychotics etc.... Also lack of sleep can cause Alzheimer's and other things, I've read ![]()
