And Zyprexa Makes it's Exit

Here I am weaning off Zyprexa, and this happens. The last two days I've had a nasty cold (with fever) and had to go to the ER because I had chest pain and my INR was subtheraputic. (I.e. my blood was too thick.) Then I get a call from the doctor I saw a few weeks ago about my liver. I knew I have fatty liver disease. But now, they say its the next stage up and the only other stage left is cirrhosis. Cure? Lose weight. Why did it happen? They didn't say, but I looked it up and it seems that Zyprexa is well-known for fatty liver disease. Imagine that: Very high cholesterol and now one step away from cirrhosis of the liver. Zyprexa is evil! I hope Rexulti doesn't do this.

Some of these weight gainers in general are evil. I just started Seroquel XR and hope it doesn't do any harm to me, but who knows.

At least you're almost off Zyprexa, which is the good thing.

Thanks, blue. I've been on zyprexa for years. It works well and doesn't have psych side effects but the medical side effects are terrible. I wish I'd never gone on it.

In the same boat with the liver issues. Add diabetes to that mix. Thankfully I'm eating less and the Metformin is doing its thing.

That's awful. So sorry to hear a med did this to you. It sucks that we have to take meds sometimes to just function in life, then to have them turn on you. I hope you can find a way to heal your liver and avoid further damage. Hope the new med works well and doesn't do harm.

I had this happen with Risperdal: I stopped it before turning diabetic. The thing is, I did not gain weight on it, but it did raise the blood glucose level.

I was recently on a low dose of Zyprexa, also without a weight gain, but it raised my cholesterol. I now keep it as my PRN.

It is awful in terms of metabolic side effects. But the thing is, as you said, it is a perfect med otherwise, so... hard choices.

Google search for metabolic side effects of REXULTI does not bring up anything at all. I hope it is your solution.

Sorry to hear about that, moose. That sounds horrible . How close are you to being off zyprexa?

I'm at 10 mg soon to be 7 1/2 on Monday I think when I see Pdoc. I go down every two weeks it seems.

some doctors use metformin with certain psych drugs to mitigate weight gain and metabolic complications. From the "alternative" angle, I've read abstracts of small studies in which the investigators used high dose antioxidants (green tea extract, alpha lipoic acid, etc.) with "atypicals," to good effect.

I am --so-- sorry this has happened. Doctors should do better, but a lot of them are careless, especially the mental health doctors. I don't know what that's about.

I used to be on metformin but not anymore for some reason. The good news is that I've lost some weight recently.

I am so very sorry moose. This is horrible and what really disgusts me is doctors not only don't tell you about these potential long term issues ( so you can make an informed decision) they will flat out act like it doesn't even matter. They don't have to live with the consequences. I'm so very sorry.
