My pdoc just prescribed me Haldol for severe agitation. Has anyone else had this med. I was told it is weight neutral but google says otherwise. Any side-effects I need to watch out for outside of akethesia which my doctor told me to watch for.

Will it work for agitation? I am going crazy with wild levels of agitation. Just took 1mg. Is that much? I am willing to try anything non-weight gaining to get rid of this horrible feeling that is driving me out of control.

Thanks

I was mixed last fall and my pdoc gave me 5 mg Haldol and Benadryl. It took me out of the mixed episode

I take 2.5 mg which is a baby dose and it helps me a lot. Only side effect is sometimes my body my twitch in a certain area and I get muscle cramps so I take cogentin with it
And that helps!

As for your dose-that's very small! 'I was taking 5mg at night and 2.5mg in am. I was a zombie. Lower dose is great for me.
Good luck!

I never took it regularly but had a haldol injection PRN in an ambulance once for severe agitation. Knocked me on my *** for weeks so it's definitely effective. Sorry I can't say anything about side effects though.
Thanks for this!

I took Haldol during a mixed episode. It got rid of the agitation and auditory hallucinations I was having. I didn't experience any side effects from it at all, not even drowsiness. I used it for a few months following just to make sure things stayed nice and calm and then was able to come off of it. I had a good experience with it.

I was given Haldol in the hospital. It gave me the worst panic attack of my life. They had to inject me with lorazepam three times to calm me down.

Thanks so much for your replies everyone. I am taking 1mg of Haldol 3 x a day and it is to be increased to 2mg 3x. So far it seems to help a little but maybe I need the higher doses. I did sleep really well last night though. No side effects so far but it has only been 3 doses so far, including the one I just had. I really hope it calms me as I am wild.

I've only had it once decades ago. It was my first time on a psych unit I had just been transferred over from the ICU where I'd been for 3 days after an attempt, was underweight and had had nothing by mouth for 4 days and the Hadoop knocked me out. Literally I was unconscious for a couple hours. It wasn't nessasary but they gave me no choice, it was either drink the shot or they would inject it. I've stayed away from it ever since. But I've heard from some people that they had good results from it and liked it better than the newer stuff.

I took a high dose but it didn't work for me. We switched to Clozaril which wreaked ha ok on my entire personality. I switched pdocs and my new med cocktail seems to work better.

I have been on Haldol for 10 years on different doses. It does the job and hasn't caused any weight gain. Sometimes they have to increase or decrease the dosage over time. The highest amount I have ever been on was 10mg which was way too much. I used to get the injection for a while when they didn't trust me with my meds, and I have been as low as 2.5mg when I was working.

I am on 5mg right now, and I think it's a pretty good amount. Only thing is I feel a bit of stiffness in my arms and body, but exercise and stretching helps with that. I think its a good pill, it does the job.

1mg, 3 x daily is not working for me. Hoping to get it increased today to 2mg, 3 x daily. No side effects so far. The agitation is unbearable. Mixed states are hell.
