Hello everyone I'm new here so please bare
with me. I suffered with anxiety since very young
and panic attacks. Recently about 3 months ago
the anxiety came back after being in remission
for 5 years. I immediately went back to the doctor and explained I thought I was suffering from anxiety again. The anxiety became really bad because I was having intrusive thoughts. I got put on Celexa and Trazodone. I have been on it for almost 4 weeks 5 mg. However I have really bad depression I can't really enjoy things the way I use to. I still have energy to clean my home and do daily things. I always have been like energetic like cleaning around the house but not like mania nothing like that. This is my first depressive episode. Well i called my
doctor yesterday and told him I was still not feeling good and he basically diagnosed me with bipolar over the phone. He said the reason was because I wasn't reacting good to my antidepressants. Can that be enough of a tea? What are your symptoms. I feel like I don't fit the symptoms. I'm going to get a second opinion but he prescribed me Zyprexa and Gabapentin.

Welcome to PC. You'll find lots of support here. Symptoms vary between individuals and between bipolar types. I'm glad you are getting a second opinion. Strange that your pdoc diagnosed you over the phone. Seems too piecemeal. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I would definitely seek that second opinion. Antidepressants do not work in the right way for many many people.
Its a strange way to diagnose bipolar. Keep us posted and good luck on your second opinion!

I agree about getting a second opinion. That is a weird way to diagnose someone. Having a reaction to an AD doesn't mean you have bipolar. Maybe you need another AD. And from what you've described, it doesn't really sound like you have the classic symptoms, IMO.

No. That is NOT enough to diagnose you as bipolar. Without the presence of at least one manic or hypomanic episode, the diagnosis bipolar disorder cannot be made. Period.

Here is the diagnostic criteria for mania:

A distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood, lasting at least 1 week (or any duration if hospitalization is necessary).

During the period of mood disturbance, three (or more) of the following symptoms have persisted (four if the mood is only irritable) and have been present to a significant degree.
1. inflated self-esteem or grandiosity
2. decreased need for sleep (e.g., feels rested after only 3 hours of sleep)
3. more talkative than usual or pressure to keep talking
4. flight of ideas or subjective experience that thoughts are racing
5. distractibility (i.e., attention too easily drawn to unimportant or irrelevant external stimuli)
6. increase in goal-directed activity (either socially, at work or school, or sexually) or psychomotor agitation
7. excessive involvement in pleasurable activities that have a high potential for painful consequences (e.g., engaging in unrestrained buying sprees, sexual indiscretions, or foolish business investments)

Hypomanic episodes have the same symptoms as manic episodes with two important differences: the hypomanic mood usually isn't severe enough to cause problems with the person working or socializing with others (e.g., they don't have to take time off work during the episode), or to require hospitalization.

These are copy-and-pastes from this site and the DSM--the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. It's the "psychiatric Bible" and also what insurers go by in their coding for payment and billing.

A second opinion is a great idea. If you have further questions, let us know.
