I had my first appointment with my new psychiatrist today.

She's taking me off of haldol, sertraline, cogentin, propranolol, and remeron.

She's replacing those meds with latuda and ambien.

If you're on latuda, do you like it? What can I expect from this? I'm sort of freaking out. I've been doing so well. I'm worried this is going to mess me up! She said that haldol was toxic and causes your brain to shrink. Obviously I don't want a shrunken brain I guess.

When I first started it I had to take it at bedtime so I'd sleep though the minor but noticeable side effects but they wore off after awhile and I love my cocktail of Latuda, propranolol and Ambien. It's the best I've ever had, I still take them all at bedtime. I just eat some cheese for food.

Do make sure you take it with at least 350 calories as it wont absorb correctly with out the calories.

I have no problems taking it.

She also wants me to just stop cold turkey on all those meds. No tapers. I don't know if that's safe or not!

At my current dose I have no side effect except occasional dry mouth. At higher dose 80 and 100, my tongue was, for lack of a better term lazy. I kept biting it. She lowered me back to 60 and haven't had that since.

I got a rash when on Latuda and either Risperidone or Haldol. They didn't know if the Latuda was the cause or the other drug so took me off both. Before the rash, Latuda seemed ok and I'd be willing to try it again if needed. With my stomach issues, eating enough calories can be challenging at times so I prefer a med that doesn't require it. If I didn't have the stomach problems or rash, it actually seemed like a good drug for awhile. Good luck and be sure to eat your calories or it won't absorb.

I really like Latuda. I actually take it with remeron (mirtazapine) and combination of a few other meds. And yes, you do need to take it with food, at least 350 calories or as Christina said, all of the medicine won't absorb and it won't be as effective as it can be. I've had no issues with it. It works well for me and has studies that show it can have the effect of cognitive improvement.

She said latuda should help with my anxiety.

Otherwise nothing really, except keeping me on gabapentin.

The only thing that has ever really helped my anxiety are benzos, but she doesn't prescribe them, and I don't want to go on one anyway. It's just sucky they're the only thing that really helps.

Thanks for the responses.

I feel better about taking latuda now. It seems to work for a lot of people. I hope I have a positive experience.

Latuda has been good for me. It did make me crazy irritable for a few weeks in the beginning though. It seems like my depression overall is less severe and shorter since I've been on it. It's been great for sleep for too. Don't really have side effects.

I was initially energized by Latuda. That wore off over time.
I take 60 mg with dinner (to meet the caloric requirement).
I get too tired above 60 mg.
I have no other major side-effects.
It has helped my cognition.

I hope your pdoc's plan works for you.

Hope you have a great experience on Latuda! It's been my only prescription for almost six months and it has put me in a great place. I'm on 60 mg. As far as tapering, when I got off my last medicine- the dr didn't ask me to do it and it worked out fine for me.

WTF? Tell her to read the PI. Latuda can CAUSE anxiety. It doesn't have any indication for lessening it. The only thing I can think is she's thinking that mitigating your other symptom(s) could lessen your anxiety.

As far as stopping cold turkey, with all those that's a bold proposition. I'd suggest tapering yourself, take a week or two and just cut down on your doses slowly. I'd never let a doc just stop all those at once.

For me Latuda ended up making me produce milk so I had to stop it. It was very embarrassing.

Latuda works well for the depression and mania, but I get anxious about an hour after I take it. My pdoc put me on Artane to knock that down. I also take Neurontin and Vistaril for the anxiety. It seems to help.

If you have private insurance, use the coupon on the manufacturer's site, as it helps with the co-pay costs.
