So my dr and pharmacist have determined I have beginning stages of tardive dyskinesia from my antipsychotic. They don't know which one but they figure it's the Seroquel. I'm incredibly frustrated as this combo I've been on has kept me stable. However I am hopeful with the new med I've been titrating up on will work.

*sigh* I just got used to taking my meds faithfully and being ok taking them. So this roadblock needs to be overcome now.

I'm on Epival (divalproex) now and weeding off the seroquel.

Anyone else experience these side effects before? What worked for you?

Should I beware of any side effects from the new med, the divalproex?

Divalproex (Depakote in the US) started to give me liver problems. We discovered it after about six months of my being on it; my liver enzyme levels went from normal to 3x normal in that time. The med has a black box warning for liver problems, so make sure your psychiatrist or GP is keeping an eye on that. Other than that and feeling a bit foggy, it was a good med.

There are meds that can help counter TD. Cogentin and Artane are a couple of them. Also high levels of Vitamin E can slow things down.

I was on Depakote for a while and had my blood checked every three-six months. I already have elevated liver levels. I was taken off of it during my last IP because it wasn't helping with the depression, and the IP pdoc and regular doc were concerned about my liver.

I got TD from Saphris (was on it 6 years). Switched to Vraylar and have had success...little jerky crap (though a little still exists). Hope yours clears up.

I'm so scared about this. I read that TD can start as stiffness and pain in the neck and hips and it's important to catch it in early stages. I have terrible stiffness in both places , even before starting these meds so how will I know? I'm waiting for my docs to get back to me on this. Side effects are so terrifying.

My doctors office called me back and put my mind at ease over this. They indicated that TD is not a reason to stop the meds and they'd just prescribe me muscle relaxants if I developed it. I sure hope I don't but I have to take the risk because I wouldn't be able to live in such a constant state of torment. We all really drew the short straw with this mental illness business. As if we don't have it bad enough, they can't make medicine without these horrible consequences. It's not fair. I wish I were more well and intelligent and could work to design a newer, better drug for all of us.
