Hello all I received a call from an agency I applied too yesterday. I missed their call but plan to return it later today. I am very nervous and my thoughts are anxeitous. I know I'm over thinking it. I have been having troubles with my sleep lately and if I get the position will have to start waking up early. But I just wanted to let you guys know and if anyone has any advice for me that would be awesome wish me luck people!

Congrats on the job offer. You are correct, when working, you have to comply with the working hours. When I was working, I had to get up at 4am to get to work on time. It was hard; I had to go to bed at 8pm in order to get my 8 hours in. I discussed the situation with my pdoc and, as I am bipolar, he placed me on a low dosage of seroquel as a sleep aide. I managed to keep the proper sleep hours for the last 10 years of my career.

Talk to your proc or your MD about your concerns. They may be able to help. Good luck! I'm pulling for you.

Thanks guys I also got a lose dose of seroquel but stopped taking it due to how it made me feel the next day side effects. Now I'm trying trazodone. But my interview is Thursday and the position is mental health practitioner so I'll be dealing with patients who have mental illness.. I wonder if I should disclose to them my disorder?

As open as I am about it, I don't think so. You don't know, yet, what sorts of preconceptions are held regarding mental illness and work performance. Sure, it's a location dedicated to mental health, but that doesn't necessarily mean your interviewers would view you fairly if you disclosed in the hiring process.

Haha thanks vertigo I won't disclose anything to them I will keep it kosher and thanks for manipulating their minds that will definitely come in handy 😂. This will be my first real job out of college now so I'm nervous but ready to learn something new!

Good Luck and I would hold off on disclosure. No Need for someone to already have an opinion of you having Bipolar and your ability to do your job

If I were a mental health patient, I don't think I would like to have someone working with me that had a mental health issue and didn't tell me. I think it would only be fair to disclose. Why not? You would have something in common with your clients, and you wouldn't be hiding it. If they like you, they will give you the job, BP or not. If they find out you have BP after the fact, they may not be so understanding.

Congratulations and good luck!! I agree with those who say not to disclose. A time in the future may come when that is appropriate but some people can be very judgmental. As for sleep, consider starting changing your sleep routine now so your body and mind are used to it by the time you start work; and you can work through any niggling issues that may arise.

No offense, but I call bullsh1t on this suggestion. Anyone working in the MH field already has a bias against someone with MH issues. And it's not usually positive - they see the best and they see the worst. Disclosing a MH issue could not possibly enhance the ability to get a job working with patients. Matter of fact that goes for almost every job, I cannot think for one minute of a job where it would be helpful to disclose in an interview situation. Other than a peer support role, where it would be a requirement.

Like it or not, there is stigma associated with a BP diagnosis. The interviewers have absolutely no way of knowing whether the candidate is stable or would be a loose cannon. AFTER getting hired it's a different story. At that point the employer legally has to deal with it just like any other disability, as it's covered under the ADA. But before getting a job, when you're vying against other qualified candidates, it's a black mark against you.
