Happy Tuesday everyone,
So a week ago I had mentioned that I really wanted to get out of my fashion marketing degree and move onto becoming an MD. I thought of becoming a therapist but with all of the time, work, and money that it would incvolve i figured I should just bite the bullet and go into full on MD-stuff. I really want to do this but as a 27 year old graduating college at 28, is it a realistic goal? I might need to take more in depth biology classes and, living in Chicago I could go to UIC and it would be much more affordable than my degree in Fashion Marketing right now. Im just worried that my bipolar disadvantages me in the realm of discipline and work functioning. I have been able to keep jobs stable but this is much different. This is want I want but I don't know if this is Manic me or Finding Myself me. Help! Roman |

Take ample time to consider this and other options. If an idea is largely mood-related, it may well lose it's attraction when your mood shifts.
If it turns out this is something you continue to want to pursue, I hope you do so! ![]() We can benefit from living/working in alignment with our truest selves. I am encouraging you to pursue your truest (most alluring) interests. ![]() WC

Your age isn't much older than the typical med student. You've got plenty of life to live after med school. Go for it. If you think you can handle the workload.

I had a episode where I thought I should work in the medical field. My thoughts were irrational. Do you have any other thoughts that go with them?

I studied for medical school, then backed out of it.
You need biology, physics, human physiology, intro chemistry, and organic chemistry. Biochemistry is recommended, but not required as far as I know (unless things have changed within the past four years). So it's much more than just biology FYI. I would try one class to see how it goes -- maybe human physiology since it's more related to medical school than the other classes. You really don't need biology in order to take that class. You can pick up the biology along the way. The other thing is that sleep is difficult to get while in medical school, especially during the residency phase, and if messed up sleep triggers episodes in you, then that's something to consider. |

I took a job as an orderly in a medical facility. I quickly realized that my talents were elsewhere and that being around sick people was only a job for me.
To get through med school, doctors operate on 4 hours sleep. With any kind of bipolar, that little sleep is bound to trigger something. Residencies doctors are on call all night. It is a very demanding job. I would not enter it lightly without talking to your therapist and see what they say.
