I was on 900 mg and started having bad winter depression. My pdoc upped me to 1800 mg and nothing. Then I was put on Lamictal. It took time to titrate up but it helped.

No. I have been on Lithium for five years and it has never helped with depression. AD's make me wacky so handling depression has been a tough one. Recently I was put on Lamotrigine and am up to 125 mg a day. It seems to have stopped the rapid cycling but left me depressed. But it is a low dose so there is hope.

I believe it is mainly used to control mania.

I've been on lithium on and off over the years. It controls mania, being the most trusted and true "mood stabilizer". But it also has a ton of research backing it's anti suicidal properties- more so than other mood stabilizers. And it does have a lot research backing it's antidepressant properties, especially important if you have bipolar and can't take regular antidepressant meds.
I have chronic and severe issues with mood regulation so it is not always clear to me that it is working as well as it could. But blood levels of it flux so much that can make it difficult to discern efficacy. And it has helped with suicidal stuff for me to a degree.

Side effects can suck. I have acne from it and am chronically thirsty and trembling hands, but it could be worse.

It's worth a try.
