snap decision

So I had to make a snap decision today regarding work. I got a call from my old direct supervisor from my old district. He said he wanted to offer me a teaching job in the high school instead of the middle school. He said I would be really good in it because it was a different administration and a different set of circumstances. Instead of teaching ELA, I'll be teaching math. But instead of having my own class, I'll strictly be co-teaching. So I don't have to worry about managing my own classroom or writing my own lesson plans. I just have to worry about the modifications for the lesson plans.

Thing is I've never taught math a day in my life, but I HAVE been a special ed teacher for five years. So I have experience in modifying lessons.

Financially, it's a much better situation. I didn't know how I was going to pay bills on a teacher's assistant salary. So I was trading occupational stress for financial stress.

But I'm worried. They let me go last year, even though I technically had an acceptable observation score. Obviously that wasn't my direct supervisor's decision, or he wouldn't have called me back. The principal that let me go is retired, and the person I think was responsible is in a different department. So I might have a chance here.

I had to make the decision within 2 hours, so....I went for it. I guess at best, it works out and I stay in education as a co-teacher, and at worst they fire me again and I know for sure that education is not for me. And at least I have financial security for another year. If they resign my contract for next year, I might even be able to save enough to look for my own place. I'd love to get out of here.

Sorry for the long ramble. I'm just not sure how I feel about this whole thing, part of me is excited and part of me is screaming "what have you done?!"

I understand your apprehension...most probably, people like us tend to always have apprehension...but I think you made an excellent choice.

Thanks for your replies everyone. Obviously I am flooded with self doubt. Especially the math part. But my mom gave me her math textbook from the college course she took so I can refresh my memory. I just hope I get an understanding co teacher. It really is a better move for me at least financially and it will give me a chance to see if I want to stay in education once and for all.

How fortuitous! I think you made the right decision and everything will work out just fine.

By high school the worse of the unruly kids have dropped out, hopefully high school is a bit easier with as far as classrooms. The nice thing about math is that it is black and white, the answers have to balance. Sounds like a great opportunity!

Congratulations!! I also think you made the right decision but man, 2 hours is not a lot of time to make it in. No wonder you are feeling stressed. Take it one step at a time. I am sure you will do great.

I got my official appointment notice today. The board approved me. So this is real! They even put me at step 2 for salary. My mind is still spinning a little and I'm worried about the math but I think I can do it. I'm just going to have to work extra hard to prove myself.

I'm excited.
