Dr. started tapering me of zyprexa and starting me on abilify. I went to fill the abilify and they wanted $1800 for it. They had to send a form to my Dr. so they could fax it to my insurance company. I am sure everything will work out but what a pain. I really want off zyprexa and on abilify. End of rant.

Second the good rant!

Basically all the insurance company wants is a pre-authorization from your doctor. All this says is that you've tried alternatives and they don't work, so the higher-priced medication is justified. It's a formality.

bioChE is right. I've been on so many *standard* drugs that didn't work that I'm now up to the really $$$$$ ones that require pre-authorizations.
In all fairness, the insurance has to be sure you really need a particular drug because if they just paid out willy-nilly EVERYONE'S premiums would go up.
Thanks for this!
