Yeesh. I’m reading the side effects of Levofloxacin (antibiotic) because the ear/nose/throat doc said this one can cause serious side effects with tendons snapping (!!). But I’m taking it anyway because I have a terrible ear infection. The pain is so bad, I can’t sleep. My ear is hot. The doc said my ear drum is all blisters and swollen. The augmentin (first antibiotic) the regular doc gave me did nothing.
So, anyway, I’m reading side effects and it says psychosis. Seriously? So then I read about bipolar and antibiotics, and apparently it is thought the infection itself may be causing mania, or it could be the antibiotic. Do you guys find antibiotics or infections trigger mania? Sigh |

I’m on the same antibiotic for pneumonia right now. The only problem I’ve been having is insomnia, which I guess could trigger mania in some but doesn’t for me, it just makes me miserable. But I’ve slept well for the past two nights so I’m hopeful it will be ok.

I just got off that for bilateral ear infections. I have never had a manic episode due to antibiotics. They have to list every single possibilty up to and including death.
Try not to worry and focus on your ear infection being cured.. Mine are finally back to normal, I can hear out of both and neither ruptured this time ( go me)

That sounds very painful. I hope it clears up and you feel better soon.

I sometimes get digestive issue or depression from antibiotics. However having an ear infection is serious business.

![]() Seriously, though, I don't look up side effects of common drugs like antibiotics. You just put yourself at risk of worrying about nothing. I certainly hope your ear gets better soon. I know how painful they can be. |

Never been manic from an antibiotic. I usually get the rage from the steroid shot they give me. lol. Like from the one i got in my foot this week.
I get weird *** side effects. Vitamin D was causing a lot of things and when I take cholesterol meds I get psychotic. |

It's certainly a benefit ~vs~ risk situation, but what people don't realize about side effects is that the manufacturers have to disclose EVERY SINGLE REPORTED side effect even if it can't be proven to have been actually caused by the drug.
Okay, I studied pharmacology and I admit I read the Physician's Desk Reference when researching drugs. Serious side effects from levofloxacin were reported by 0.1% ~ 1.0% of +/- 22,500,000 users in 2016. I'd go with the benefits...

I think the last few times I got manic I also had a urinary tract infection--I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that there was some kind of correlation between UTIs and psychosis.

I’ve never had issues with antibiotics but I know if that steroids can trigger a BP episode. Codeine affects me too.
