How long does this last? My doc prescribed a med last week. Called their prior authorization Friday and med is still unavailable. What gives?

At my old jobs it would usually take a day or an hour even. At my pdoc, it takes about 20 min. I’m not sure if it depends on your insurance or not though. I know the office is supposed to fill out a form and fax it over. I guess it depends on the time of day as well. It’s a toss up really but I’d say no longer than two days

Took like 20 mins for me too. Max of 1 hour.

When you say "called their prior authorization", do you mean you called your pharmacy? Because the pharmacy is who you should call first. They're the ones dispensing the meds and they can do the legwork for you. They can talk to insurance companies, doctors, etc

I hope this gets resolved soon

Prior auth can take a while if the insurance wants it to. I've had it go so far that my pdoc had to present a case before another doctor (team of doctors?) and wait for approval based on how badly I really needed the drug. I've also had it go really fast when it was for a generic that wasn't on the formulary. Once they kept denying my pdoc without reason and she sent the same appeal in 5 times. They approved for life after that; I think they were sick of her. If it gets into a reivew the pdoc has to show why no other cheaper options will work for you.

Yea they said it wasn’t approved and the doctor had to call. I called the insurance company they gave me an 800 number for pre authorization and gave it to the doc which called it on Friday.

I've been denied meds several times. It takes a week or too if you're getting denied. My insurance it's only authorized for a year when it gets approved.

Everywhere I’ve worked or any dr I saw, the people doing the prior auth could be the front desk, the pharmacy, a medical assistant etc. I had to do them all the time and it sucks lol

If it's being prescribed for off label use it could take several days...

I hate to tell you but if the insurance company decides to put up a fight it could take a lot longer.

Doc said insurance approved it, so don’t know why insurance is saying it still hasn’t received it. Way my therapist described it was that insurance company and prior authorization are separate and that maybe the delay.

It typically takes a few days , especially if the insurance wants to make you tried xyz first since they want to pay for cheaper meds instead of a new costly one.

Usually a few days, I had one take almost 2 weeks.

Hopefully it gets resolved soon

The doc called them again and showed me the form that was approved and the confirmation code. Pharmacy is still saying the insurance hasn’t approved it yet. I called the insurance company who said they haven’t received it yet, I tell them the doctor did the case number and approval. They said I have to talk to their prior authorization department, I’m on hold for twenty minutes and t hangs up. I’m beyond frustrated. What do I do now?
