I had an episode that was considered "manic", but I believe that it was actually a psychotic episode because I do not think I had the other symptoms other than paranoia and hallucinations. But I do not remember most of it. Is this normal?

Hi IR. Welcome to Psych Central. Sorry you experienced mania.

You say you are suffering from Depression in your profile and here you talk about mania. I am a peer supporter and cannot diagnose your condition but everything you have said so far matches up with what other people I know that are diagnosed as bipolar. When they have mania they can get psychotic and paranoid and they are sometimes call schizoaffective by their medical professionals.

Symptoms of mania is described more here

I only remember 6 of my 10 hospitalizations. I reached psychosis during at least 5 of them according to my psychiatric records. I do remember some of the psychosis, but as HALLIBETH said, just bits and pieces like being dragged to the isolation room a few times for injections. Once I recall being followed around the ward by a hospital security. He also sat outside my room. That only fueled paranoia.

I don't remember most of my episodes. Which is a blessing. I wish i didn't remember any of them at all. Very triggering for me.

Oh my god, yeah you can have memory loss. I don't remember a lot of my bad psychotic episodes. My husband will tell me things I've done, and I just don't remember. It makes me feel really upset. There's one hospital stay I don't even remember.

I have almost complete memory loss during a severe manic episode.

I tend to have what I call manic blackouts. They're a lot like the alcoholic blackouts I used to experience back in my drinking days. I will often be unable to recall parts or most of a manic episode. I highly suspect I black out on the more obnoxious episodes because my friends and family have told me about my behaviors during them, and I cannot remember those things happening.

I’ve had memory issues for many years (before cannabis) which bothers me greatly because my memory was one of the few things I’ve been able to take pride in and count on. Like BPnurse, I experience blackout like symptoms I guess. People tell me afterward what I said and did and it doesn’t ring true but guess it is. Not a good feeling and I’m sorry you suffer it

Ugh, I hate that—last time I was full-on manic, I had blissfully forgotten what I had done. I was a little shocked 😳 at some of the emails I had written. After sitting thinking for a while, it started to come back to me. But if I hadn’t seen the emails, I would never have remembered or thought about what I had said or done again.

I wonder what else I did where there are no footprints to find.
