I've had a bad cold for the last 5 days. It's so bad that my temperature goes up every afternoon and I'm feverish. I've also had a really bad cough which is worse after I go to bed, so I've been taking Delsym cough syrup before bed to help with that. The really weird thing is, even though I'm sick I'm not sleeping much. I know I need to sleep to get well, but I just can't. Do you know if cough syrup can cause mania? Or can being sick itself trigger an episode? I think if I could get enough sleep I would get well, but I just can't too much. I don't know what to do. It's almost bedtime and I know for sure I won't sleep if I'm coughing all night.

There are times that I have taken Delsym, and it will exacerbate any underlying signs of mania that I have or sort of an irritable hypomania. It gives me problems when it comes to sleep too. I think when someone is not doing well physically, it can throw things off, where perhaps it can make someone more susceptible to mania. I have experienced this when feverish and when my health is off and have posted about this a while ago. Plus, if a cold is interfering with sleep, that is sometimes enough in itself to trigger mania (in my own experience and just a general observation as well). I hope you feel better soon. My physical health hasn't been too good either, so I can relate.

Yeah, the DXM in cough syrup can have mental side effects. They’re unpredictable.

It contains pseudoephedrine, one of the ingredients used to make meth.

I avoid all products that contain pseudoephedrine because it can trigger hypo/mania in me.

Uggh, yes. Last time I took cough syrup I didn't sleep for 4 days.

OMG, this is why I need this place. I’ve got a problem with mania from drugs. I didn’t know about this one.

NyQuil can have me sideways if I take it for more than a couple days
