I need to know what drugs cause mania.

I’ve already been screwed by phen-fen diet pills (antidepressant plus speed, essentially) and propanolol (caused insomnia).

What else?

Thank you so much,

Antidepressants by themselves (with no mood stabilizer and/or AP) can cause mania. And remember that mania is not always euphoric or "up". I've experienced dysphoric mania in the form of horrible, extreme, relentless anxiety...a kind-of delusional anxiety.

Any ‘cold medication’. Any anaesthetic. It’s not a medication but I find having any infection will be followed by mania.

Steroids is another problem, simple prednisone that you get from a GP can cause huge issues

Some people with bipolar disorder can take antidepressants and some stimulants if taken with a moodstabilizer/anti manic. I can't. As for OTC stuff, I don't even go there other than typical safe supplements, like vitamins and minerals, or something deliberately prescribed. I don't overdo caffeine, but too much usually makes me anxious or have racing heart.

I take a somewhat low dose of Propranolol at 40 mg per day for anxiety/racing heart and have no problems from it.

Zonegran (Zonisamide),

a medication that was originally developed as a seizure drug but is used to prevent migraines and for weight loss, caused a terrible mania in me and I lost my job as a result of that manic episode. Mania is listed as a side effect and I regret taking the drug.

I cannot take Propranolol because my blood pressure falls to 80/40 and below, but when I did try it, it did not cause mania at all. In fact I continued being depressed. So it is a matter of an individual reaction.

Be careful with Lamictal - even though it is called a mood stabilizer, it can cause elevated mood.

Oh my gosh, I do have migraines, thank you for the tip.

I think the insomnia the propanolol caused set off mania. I hadn’t slept for days.

The Lamactil is most puzzling...

Thank you!

This is scary and seems like it could be hard to remember when a situation might come up. Thanks!

You have some really good points.

I really shouldn’t mess around with OTC.

Thank you!

Caused my worst run of auditory hallucinations; it set it off, and it just kept on keeping on for several weeks of what I now know is an unpleasant manic state. That was many years before diagnosis, so I didn't really understand what my problem was. I did learn to keep my mouth shut about it.

Cured the poison ivy rash real good though.

Thank you

Certain antihistamines can trigger or present as episodes. I personally get very awake yet sometimes unable to figure out what's going on with benedryl.

I started on BOTOX last May, quarterly, and life is SO much better now. Not only does it work to prevent most attacks, but those that still do occur are no longer debilitating - they are rather exhausting, but that is it. And (if that is relevant) Medicare covers BOTOX.

I take zonegran daily for migraines. I can only take 200 mg though, when I tried to go up to 300 mg, I got severely anxious. Other than that I've had no issues with it. Have been on it since 2016. Seriously though, changing my diet has helped migraines more than anything.
