If you do a safety check on yourself at a hospital, how long do they keep you? Are they required to put you in an inpatient care facility then?

It depends. The only time I was admitted through the ER I just went and told them I was going through drastic med changes, felt suicidal and impulsive and did not feel remotely afraid at home and that my psychiatrist was in favor of the admission.

They were out of beds so I was in the ER for a long time and heard a lot. Some people came in drunk or high and slept it off and after a welfare check were sent home. Others were assessed for their depression level and hooked up with outpatient options.

It really hangs on 1) Are you suicidal or could become suicidal or self-injurious because you are very impulsive? 2) Do you want to hurt someone else? 3)Are you able to care for yourself? (I've been in for that one a couple of times but my doctor just arranged for me to go in so I missed the ER assessment).

Does that help? I'm not sure this is what you were looking for but I didn't want your post to get lost..
