I work full-time. I might be able to shift my schedule around so I only miss four hours a week if I go three days a week. I really don’t even know if IOP will help though. I get so easly enraged, it’s starting to effect me at work And then I’m afraid to go anywhere because things set me off easily. I really don’t want to get fired. It’s weird because I will be really elated Over practical stuff so it’s not unjustified and then a few minutes later bawling and suicidal. I went on leave two years ago for two months and I really don’t wanna do that again. Oh and I told off two support groups this year so please don’t suggest that..it’s a sensitive topic.

Do you have to option to go full time to IOP by taking short term disability? That's what I did. IOP was something like 9am to 2pm weekdays.

I was mostly on short-term or long-term disability when I attended IOPs. In those cases I went during the daytime 3-5 days per week (mostly 3) for 3-6 hours per day, depending on if I was doing Intensive Outpatient or Partial Hospital Program.
I did once attend IOP while working, but I was only working part-time at that time, though my job was officially a full-time job. That time I worked in the mornings and attended the evening IOP program. I forget what the hours were. If you feel that your mental health is jeopardizing your job, then you should discuss that with a psychiatrist. It may be possible for them to arrange with your employer to have short-term disability or some work time accommodations to attend an IOP. |

PH, partial hospitalization was during the day and IOP was at night so people could return to work and still have support.

I negotiated my work schedule around my MH commitments. When I worked retail I had a set off day, when I started this job, I only worked 4 days a week so for 3 consecutive years I could devote my Thursdays to therapy, DBT and pdoc at our OPD facility.
These days I work full time and make up for the 2hrs or so I miss for T or pdoc visits.

My state does not have short term disability. Our company offers AFLAC but I did not sign up for because I figured I would have a hard time getting paid for something related to bipolar. I am covered by FMLA of course and I do have some vacation time but I would rather use that for when I’m feeling well. I’ve looked for evening iop Programs before and I haven’t been able to find any in my area. Either way I made an appointment with my therapist for Wednesday so that we can discuss it.

The way IOP works in my area is such that you cannot work while attending. I have short term disability which has always covered me, however, and they are very good at filling out the paperwork in the program. I've done IOP at least 3 times so yeah...I'm familiar with the process.
![]() Anyway, I guess the answer is it depends on the program, and it depends on your job. Imho though, I feel that doing both would be a little too intense for me. If I were in a state where I needed to go through IOP again, I don't think I should be doing it while working. I think, mentally, I would need to just focus on the IOP. PS what state doesn't have short term disability?? I have never heard of this! I briefly worked a per diem job and tried to buy my own disability insurance and you are right, they'd likely not cover you. I was denied through many, many companies both because I have a chronic hip issue and, well, because I've had SI attempts in the past. Long ago. ![]() |

I’ve done IOP during the day, when on disability, though I initially tried to work weekends, and I did an evening program where we were expected to work, or volunteer, 20 hrs/wk.

This program is typically six weeks but I don’t think I need that much time. I spoke to a lady at work and she is willing to switch with me for one of my days so that I wouldn’t be missing that much time. I talked to my therapist about it tomorrow.
