I don't qualify for state insurance anymore because on February 1st they changed it to where you have to make 20k or less to qualify. I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I'm on a year long mental health commitment (yes, they changed it to a year!!!).

I don't know what I'm going to do, but I'm freaking out. We looked at the market place but none of the plans cover all of my medication. I'm going to have to cancel my appointment with my pdoc in April, since I can't afford to wrack up more medical debt.

I am so sorry you are going through this. I went through something similar the beginning of the year and it was so frustrating. I hope you can find some kind of solution to your situation. I finally was able to get the market place to help me out.

I am sorry you are going through this.

How are people supposed to obtain meds, be treatment compliant and remain hopeful when there are so many potential barriers to doing so.

Continue seeking solutions, as frustrating as it may be. I hope others come along with ideas on how to get through this.

Truly, my heart goes out to you.

What happens to the commitment if you don't keep your appointment? Is there a social worker you can talk to about this before you start canceling things and stopping meds?

I lost mine in January. I make too much to qualify for a Marketplace discount, and too little to actually be able to afford insurance. If I signed up, it would cost me more than one and a half times my monthly rent payment.

I hope that you're able to find a workaround.

What state do you live in where the income limit for Medicaid is $20K? I get only about $17,000 a year from SSDI and don't qualify for Medicaid in my state. I do get Medicare which is literally a lifesaver, but it doesn't cover everything and I'm struggling with medical bills. My income is supposedly above poverty level. Do we know any more jokes? I can't even afford to live on my own!

I have not been following you here at PC. I just want to say that I have been in a similar postpition where I can no longer afford the services that are being provided to me. I can understand and empathize over your situation. You said that you are involved in a commitment situation. What does this mean? Does this mean that you have been restricted to a facility that you may be in now? Perhaps you are on Medicaid now, and the changes to the requirements make it that you can no longer afford any longer your stay in that facility? Please help me understand. I am reluctant to go to a psych facility for this reason, for my finances would be hit hard over one stay in such a facility.

I'm on a mental health commitment because of all the times I attempted suicide. I have to take my meds and go to groups and see my therapist once a week. Without insurance this is really going to add up. Luckily I think I'll be able to get medicaid through a different source. I really hope it works out!

I'm glad to read that you think you've found a solution. I hope it works out, too.

Richest country in the world and we've got people who can't afford their medications and doctors visits. All I can say is that we should all cast our votes appropriately and/or write our congressmen/women and senators. What we have needs major improvement! And let's be sure that people with pre-existing conditions aren't penalized or rejected. We've got to fight especially hard for mental health care parity to remain or be provided, depending on what they come up with. Seems to me that the only recent mention of improving mental healthcare lately was as a result of the Florida school shooting. That doesn't mean anything will be done though.

I live in a well off area (which my husband and I can't afford to live in anymore). I will say that my town does have low cost therapy options sometimes available through religious-organizations (a local Episcopal church and Jewish organization have professional mental health services). That's something for people to look into, if available. In both cases their services are available to anyone in need, regardless of their religious affiliation or lack thereof. I've heard of similar through Catholic Charities. I also think that in some places YMCA/YWCA's might offer similar.

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) offices can sometimes provide consumers with help finding services. You can find your local NAMI office at https://www.nami.org/Find-Your-Local-NAMI Some NAMI offices are much more helpful and responsive than others.
